I looked around at my photos. They were all of her. Some were of her now with her short, curly black hair. Some were zoomed in shots of her mouth, eyes, and even that wide ass. She was my Goddess.
"Oh, Hazel." I whispered, touching a picture of her full lips.
Mariah huffed, "How do you even like her. She looks like a modern day Snow White."
I spun around in shock, "Excuse me? She is my p-"
"Princess. Yeah, I know." She huffed.
I grabbed the top of her pixie cut black hair. She screamed out and fell to her knees.
"Don't ever disrespect her! Do you want me to spill about what happened last summer?" I layered the threat in my voice.
"No! Please!" She cried out in pain.
I released her hair and she dropped to her hands and knees and rubbed her head.
"I'm sorry." Mariah's voice shook.
A soft knock sounded on the shed door, "Sam, if your gonna spend the summer with your Dad you need to come on."
My Mom's voice sounded impatient. I put all my photos into the shoe box they stayed in and snapped the lid on.
"Coming, Mom!" I called out.
I heard her footsteps leave and I rushed out to the truck, stuffing my shoe box in the duffle bag that was sitting in the back.
I texted Mariah.
Make sure you meet us there. Bring the stuff.
Mom looked at me, "So, why did you decide to go stay with your dad this summer?"
I shrugged, "Needed some time away from here."
"What do you mean?"
"This town is just... I don't know."
She sighed, "I'm doing the best I can."
I smiled, "Your fine, Mom."
She coughed into her arm, "Listen, Sam, I need to tell you something."
My heart began to pound, "Yeah, Mom?"
She smiled warmly at me, "I went to see the doctor."
"Mom-"
"Listen!"
I shut up and she continued, "He ran some tests on me and it turns out, Sam, I have cancer."
I gulped, "What? Mom, what stage?"
"Stage three. I'm gonna be staying with your Aunt and going to treatment at Saint Johns."
"You'll be in town?" Hazel's face creeped into my mind.
"Since your going to be at your dad's house I figured you wouldn't want to drive back and forth to see me."
"Thank you, Mom. You will be fine in the end." I was trying to convince myself more than her, but I kept seeing Hazel's face.
We entered North Brook and I smiled. I could nearly smell her peach scented perfume. I was hungry for her.
