Derrick hurriedly ran back and rapped on the window.
Scarlett opened it, and he leaned inside, holding her through the window, and kissing her passionately, his hands running over her body in the nightgown. He hoped Lizzie was far enough away not to be watching.
But after all, if he didn’t go in, he would be able to pull himself away quickly, and be back with Lizzie within five minutes, as he said he would.
Right now, all he wanted though, was to make love to Scarlett one more time. There was still time before morning. He wished now that Lizzie wasn’t waiting. Why did she always have to be waiting on him? Well, he would have to do what he said and tell Scarlett he loved her.He unwrapped her arms from his waist, and looked into her eyes. “Scarlett, I love you. I love you very much... And I just wanted you to hear it one more time, in case I forgot to say so earlier. I really love you, and I’m sorry for how I’ve treated you. I just wanted you to hear that before you left---I have to get back to Lizzie. I told her I would," he admitted guiltily. The woman he loved more than anything was going away and he couldn't even spend the rest of the night with her.
“Well, I don’t want you going back to her, Derrick! Damnit! I want you to stay the rest of the night with me! But I love you, too! And I’m going to miss you…” Scarlett answered passionately, hoping beyond hope he would change his mind.
He looked torn and distraught. “Go on then, go back to Lizzie!” She screamed at him, trying not to cry.
“I’m sorry, Scarlett," he whispered. He rubbed her back briefly before running up through the field and past the garden wall, where Lizzie was waiting on the porch, a stern and unhappy look on her face, her arms crossed.
Lizzie opened the door for them and walked up the stairs ahead of him; She wasted no time getting in bed, and turning to her side away from him. He hoped he hadn’t just condemned himself to a life without sex from his wife, just from his desire to have a few last words with Scarlett. He hesitantly wrapped his arms around Lizzie. “I’m sorry,” he whispered, “Just a few last words, Lizzie. You’ll have me to yourself, soon,” he assured her. She shifted uncomfortably, wanting to shake him off, but managed to refrain from pushing his arms away. She had seen the way he had been running his arms all over Scarlett's body, with her waiting for him. Nevertheless, Patsy had cautioned her to at least allow her husband's touch, even if she couldn't bring herself to sleep with him, and she obeyed, knowing things would run more smoothly if she could manage this.
In the morning, there was a polite breakfast, in which Lizzie and Scarlett sat stiffly andmanaged to hardly address each other directly at all, and Derrick looked forlorn and uncertain of himself.
Then everyone went to the porch to see Mr. Morgan and Scarlett off.
Patsy wrapped her arms firmly around Scarlett.“You take care of yourself and be good. I love you like your mama, Scarlett, and I want you to do your best! I’m going to miss you; We all are!” Patsy added an extra squeeze at the end, and said loudly enough for Mr. Morgan to catch her meaning: "Now, you come back and visit sometimes. We’re counting on seeing you at least twice a year! Now the kids are old enough to be on they own, an’ I’ll look out for them... But you make sure they know they still have a mother out there!” Patsy commanded, imparting her strength to Scarlett.
