It seemed that every time I began to think of Von Steubon as a friend, he withdrew and began to act in his usual sullen manner once more. I admit that he utterly puzzled me.
I had been back, serving as his secretary, only once in the recent days. Most of my mornings were spent out of doors, with the work details. There were a few more times when I supervised the work detail in which Matthew worked.
Every time Von Steubon came to inspect the workers, he seemed stiff and withdrawn, ignoring me, for the most part.
I wondered what I had done to upset him so, and could only conclude that he must somehow have found out that I had not been cautious enough and that Matthew now knew at least part of my secret.
