The morning of the twenty-third, I awakened early, and laid there in bed for a time. Schubert, who had been following me around in Freidrich’s absence, was curled up under the blankets, next to my feet.
As my state of awareness increased, and I became more awake, the number “23” became more clear within my mind.
I got up immediately, and dressed. Schubert watched me, looking down from the top bunk. Once I was finished dressing, I picked him up and smiled at him, telling him that his master would be back today.
I reported for one last morning with Heinrich Schwab.
And at noon, Freidrich returned.
