Eventually, I cornered him. I asked him what was wrong.
At first, he looked as though he would not answer, but he finally sighed, and hung his head.
“I suppose I sometimes feel like I’m not doing…enough. I almost feel as though…what I am doing is not really making a difference.”
“How can you say that?” I said, immediately. “Never tell yourself that. You’re making a much bigger difference than you know for all the prisoners.” I paused, before saying, “I know. From experience.”
He shook his head, still looking discouraged.
