Our plane had finally touched down in California. The sun was just beginning to set and the children were sleeping peacefully. Meanwhile, I stayed awake the whole flight trying to piece together what would be our lives from here on out.
No matter how many times I tried to think of a positive ending, my thoughts would detour and give me the worst ending possible. Brandon was not in the vision. I pushed it far from the front of my mind but it still lingered not too far behind.
As the passengers began to stand to gather their carry-on I began to wake my children. I knew I would probably have to carry Ky but there was a lingering irritation in my lower stomach. Mimi woke up and was on full alert. Her eyes darted every which way as she tried to scratch herself awake fully. I took her hand to keep her from clawing at her skin.
"You're okay love." I tried to soothe her. She looked at me weary as her eyes were barely open. It was finally an opening for us to exit. I put him on my hip and carried him off the plane.
As I wandered through the airport, heading for the exit. Brandon told me I would know who was picking me up just by the face, but that wasn't really useful. But I guess.
We finally made it to the pickup area. I glanced around but no one stood out. Everyone just looked like regular old people here to pick up their loved ones.
"Bri?" I heard as someone lightly tapped my shoulder. I squeezed Kyson tightly as I prepared to turn around.
"Yes?" Let's just say Brandon wasn't lying about me instantly knowing. This man was a spitting replica of Ralph. I mean the hair, the nose, those very pink lips. The woman with him stood beside him, they both looked very well off.
"Drew." He smiled as he took my hand. The woman that accompanied him took Mimi's hand and they began to lead us outside. "Where are my manners? This is my wife Taylor."
Taylor resembled Chloe. Same dark pretty skin. Long legs, petite figure. Taylor, however, flaunted her big pretty curly mane. She wore red lipstick and was dressed in a black dress suit.
"Hi. It's nice to finally meet you." She smiled warmly at me. "Our little prince has told us a lot about you."
I wish I could say the same. He didn't tell me much about them other than Ralph was Drew's father and that he trusted drew with his life. He did mention Drew was married but he didn't tell me to who.
"We're gonna take good care of you guys until the prince has returned."
Here they go with the little prince thing. It always threw me off when Ralph and Rosa did it. It was like he was their little prize. But they did hold Brandon in high regard so I wouldn't consider him a pet. I still didn't understand it though. Ralph has a son, why couldn't Drew be the little prince? What was it about Brandon that made him so important to them?
He traveled in an all-black Cadillac that had extremely tinted windows. They put all of our things in the trunk and then we set out. As they drove Mimi gripped my hand tightly.
"You're alright love," I told her as I pulled her under my arm to hold her. In my lap, Kyson slept soundly.
"Bri, you're going to love your new home. It's so cozy and wonderful. The neighborhood is quiet as well." Drew said as he peeked at me from the rearview mirror.
"There is no neighborhood sweetie." Taylor corrected him. "The area is however rather quiet."
"What is he planning to do?" I blurted out the question, ignoring what they were initially saying. He clutched the steering wheel tightly.
"Bri, maybe this isn't the best time to have this conversation in front of the little ones."
"I refuse to be kept in the dark."
"And you won't. When we reach the house and the children are settled in we'll answer all of your questions." Taylor answered me cooly.
"Fine."
We drove for what felt like hours. When we finally pulled into a residential area there was a single house. A grand gate made from tall brown brick and metal.
He typed in a code and the gate slowly opened.
"We'll be changing the code so that only you will have it." He told me as he slowly proceeded into the gate when it opened. Even inside the gate we still weren't near the house. We still had a long driveway to pull through. From inside the car, I could see the plentiful trees and their flowers.
It truly was breathtaking. This was nothing like the houses we were in before. They were all raggedy and run down. This house looked like something out of a magazine.
"Pretty bird!" Mimi cooed as she snatched out of my arm to glare out the window. Birds flew about the trees, chirping and swooping around.
"Yeah, pretty birds," I said as I kissed the back of her head. Things may be better like he said. But still, in my mind, the only thing that would make this better is if we were all together. We parked in front of the house. Drew and Taylor stayed quiet as I took in the exterior. Tears filled my eyes as I thought of all the possibilities.
The sun shined right into our yard illuminating everything. It resembled paradise.
"If you think this is beautiful just wait until you see the backyard," Drew smirked as he ushered us inside. The inside was even more beautiful. It all just took my breath away. To the point where I just wanted to drop to my knees. The tiled floor, the tall beams, the view of the rest of the city from the back of the house. It all just caught me off guard.
