I walked along the halls. Taylor beside me as the headmaster's assistant gave us a rundown of the school. It looks grand like something out of a tv show. The halls were massive and the walls were covered in history and the students' work and also the school's accomplishments.

"So we have a graduation rate of 92% and we also offer summer programs that allow the students to study abroad for their post-secondary success."

She rambled on and on about all the programs they offered but she didn't mention any of the social clubs they had. It was still crazy to me to know that I had a kindergartener and a fifth grader. In the last two and half years, it was difficult having to be a mother, teacher, nurse, chef, and everything else that children who did remote learning. But I did the best I could do.

"We have Spanish club, debate club as well as a plethora of others. In your package folder, you'll find a detailed description of them all."

"Do you off clubs for children with special needs?"

"Absolutely. Here at Orvilton Academy for Gifted and Elite students, we make our learning experiences as inclusive as possible for all our students."

"Will there be aid provided?"

"If your child's IEP permits it then yes." She answered my question as she continued to walk the halls.

"It seems pretentious as hell, but I promise it's a great school." She whispered as she smiled at a few staff members that passed us by.

"Yeah but my kids are very introverted kids and I've been their teacher for the last two and half years."

"Ky will be fine. Now if you can get Milani to unlatch from both you and Brandon—she'll be fine too." Taylor laughed as she looped her arm through mine. "This will be good for them."

We finally reached the admissions office and a curvy, short black woman who wore her hair in a sleek ponytail smiled at me. Her skin was a deep mahogany color and it was blemish free.

"Hello, I'm headmaster Lane."

Headmaster? She looked like she was a student herself. I tried to deviate from staring at her in amazement.

"Umm-Brielle."

"Nice to meet you miss Brielle. My assistant tells me you're looking to enroll your children here—is that correct?"

"Yes. It is. She was just giving us a tour of the school grounds and I think I love the school even more now."

"That's good to hear." She smiled and clutched her hands together. "Nice to see you again Taylor."

"Likewise." She smiled and nodded.

Ms. Lane instructed us to come into her office which was filled with certificates and degrees and pictures of important-looking people with big checks. Including Drew and Taylor.

"So tell me about your scholars." She said as she folded her hands on top of her desk.

"Well, Milani is ten years old and Kyson is Five. Kyson is interested in building things and Milani is a drifter she picks a new hobby almost every week but she gives it her all in the time that she's interested."

"They sound wonderful." She smiled warmly. "Is there anything I should know about them specifically?"

That question made me feel weird. Up until now, I didn't have to give much thought to any details concerning my kids. I certainly can't tell her that Kyson is from a previous relationship on his father's side and that Milani is actually stolen.

"Um—Kyson is slow to warm up. And Milani has special needs."

She lowered her eyes as she nodded. She shot a quick glance at Taylor who had her eyes on me. I told her part of the truth. It did take Kyson a while to warm up to me as well as other people, and Mimi is considered special needs from her autism diagnosis.
