"Mommy—are we going to school today?" He asked as he burst through my bedroom door. I hadn't made it a mission to get out of my bed. I rubbed my eyes and sat up slowly as he hurriedly climbed under the cover and laid his head on my pillow.
"I was thinking we could stay in and have a sick day."
"Are you sick again? Does your tummy hurt?"
He placed his little hand on my face and looked me right in the eyes. He was such a nurturing kid. He was always looking out for Mimi, always gentle. Don't get me wrong, Kyson had his moments were he could be sour but he was softer than I imagined he would be. He had been through so much just like Brandon and me and yet he remained kind.
"My tummy is fine. I just missed you. You and Mimi are always at school." I small smiled as I ran my hands through his curly hair. "I just wanted to hang out with my babies."
"Are you sad that daddy is gone again?" He asked me all of a sudden. "Because I am."
His face went sad and my heart broke. This was tough, his absence didn't just affect him but it affected the kids as well.
"He'll be back soon."
"He took his gun." He told me as he played with my hair. "Who is he trying to kill?"
Now it was my turn to sit up completely. I had no idea what this little baby is talking about. He kept his eyes focused on me and neither one of us said anything. I didn't know if I was disturbed by the fact that he knew he had a gun or the fact that he even understands the concept of a gun.
"Ky—how do you know he had a gun?"
"When I came upstairs to say bye he was putting it in his bag."
I pulled my child into my arms and kissed his forehead. I had no clue that Brandon had a gun let alone the fact that he took it with him. Those feelings I had just kept getting stronger and stronger. Something isn't right. I don't know what it is but I needed to resolve them.
"I'm sure he took it for protection. He doesn't mean to kill anyone."
As much as I wanted to assure him, it was difficult to. This child is so advance he could read through bullshit from miles away. As I looked him in the eyes he looked like he was fixing to ask me more questions but he went quiet when the door opened again.
"I figured you were still in bed when I took Mimi's laundry to her room and found her sprawled across the bed snoring like a lioness."
"We're taking a sick day auntie Taylor." He turned his head to answer before I could.
"Really. Should I make us a sick day breakfast then?" She beamed as she entertained his shenanigans. He jumped up from my arms and leaped up and down.
"Yes! Yes! Yes!"
"Alrighty then—sick day breakfast coming up."
He continued to jump on the bed. She stood there peering at me for what felt like hours although it was only seconds.
"Hey—why don't you shower and wake up your sister while me and mommy get breakfast started." Taylor suggested. He nodded his head as he proceeded to Superman leap from my bed. A second before he hit the floor my heart stopped beating, but when he took off toward the door I was fine. "What's going on?"
"Something isn't right." I shook my head as I flung the covers from my body.
"I'm sure it's fine." She said innocently. I probably shouldn't project my feelings on her because her husband was on that trip as well and it wouldn't help for both of us to be stressed out. I put my robe on and sat down.
