And She Clapped

I gave me to you on a platter of gold,
I gave my heart to you in a manner untold,
I told you it was in your hands so the chapter could unfold—
And it seemed heavy at first but you seemed to hold.

I told you things about you that you didn't behold,
I cried for you even in the biting cold,
You apologized but how could I be consoled?
It seemed so true, so real but I was cajoled
Into believing I could call out a new way from the old—
Yet, I ended up lost, broken and sold!

I told her,
I told her my heart was in her hands as time tapped and tapped—
Yet, she looked me straight in the eye for the third time and she clapped.

There was my heart again. Apart, lost and entrapped.
