Jessica's pov.
It was cloudy and gloomy October evening. The autumn wind was gusting through the strands of my blonde hair sending shiver down my spine. I sat on the age old concrete steps of my house hugging my green sweater.
My house is not much, but it's home. It's small, cozy and always has a homely vibe surrounded by trees. The different shades of brown stones could warm up anyone's heart, the front porch held a lot of memories like trick or treating for Halloween. The swing which was dancing with the wind now, was the place I used to fall asleep in a Summer afternoon.
The back garden is a place which doesn't have a inch that my feet hasn't explored. The front yard has a lot of oak trees, which are now donned in a brownish-orange leaves. It's a place where nature dances, that's what my mom and I love this place so much. Speaking of my mom I wonder why she isn't here yet, she's never 45 minutes late.
I sat tapping my foot impatiently as I admiring the orange-brown autumn that fell to the ground leaves. I lifted my head as I heard the sound of tiers coming to a halt. A police car, why is police car here, I wondered.
A tall, well built man maybe in his late 30s came outside of it. He was dressed in a police uniform, with his badge proudly pinned on his chest. He scanned the area, looking for something with narrowed eyes and relaxed when he saw me.
It took him a few long strides and before I knew, he was standing in front of me. I looked into the him deep brown eye confused. "Jessica Lahay." He asked lifting his eyes. "That's me." I said standing up.
"I'm Deputy Johnson." He said lifting his hands for me to shake and I did so. "Pleasure. What may I help you with." I asked politely. I might seem like a soft, innocent and polite girl, but I'm actually completely different. I'm not those kind of girl who bully the younger kids, I'm the one who slaps those idiots faces for hurting a poor soul.
"I'm very sorry to inform you this, your mother, Natalia Lahey, had meet with a car crash, we did our best to save her but.....she passed away half an hour ago." He said with a very soft sympathetic voice.
I stood like a statue , his words stabbed my heart leaving a permanent hole. My mom, my only family is no more. Tears started flowing like a waterfall down my cheeks. A million thoughts rushed into my mind and my lips shivered.
"What." I whispered not abled to process the news. "I'm really sorry for your loss, child. But since she was your parent and legal guardian, we need see who will take care of you now." I simply nodded slowly, not knowing what to say. Does this mean I'll be placed in foster care.
"We found these keys in here bag. I believe it is to your house. I'll give you two hours, kid. Eat some food and pack your belongings. I'll come and pick you up and we'll see what we can do." He said and gave me a small smile. "Okay, thank you." I replied softly.
With that he walked back to his car while I stood still. I turned to and looked at my house which made tears fall from my eyes. I swallowed the lump on my throat and opened the door. The smell of vanilla hit me and I inhaled the scent deeply. My mom loved the sent so she lights up vanilla scented candles, well lid.
I locked the door and dropped myself to the the floor, with my schoolbag and basketball falling to the hardwood. The ball bounced and the sound echoed through the house. Each bounce brought me memories of her. It's weird, the same memories which bring you happiness also brings you tears.
My mother, my beautiful mother is gone and she never going to come back. I'll never be able to get her warm bear hugs or her loving kisses or her smoothening words again. What will I do without her by my side.
