loneliness is a different animal than sadness.
where sadness is content to heavy on the heart,
loneliness is like an insatiable drain.
it takes
and takes
slowly until there is nothing left.
all you feel is an absence
of some unnamable thing,
because loneliness has taken its name as well.
you go on searching,
your whole life over perhaps,
but you will never find,
as something you cannot name
cannot be found.
loneliness takes names.
it takes faces.
the loneliest place on earth
is in a crowd full of people.
all present but not really,
most straining to find that precious,
nameless lost thing.
those who keep company
do not know how privileged they are
until bridges are burned
and doors are shut
and that starving loneliness
finds a new victim.
