"I'm so sorry officer. I promise this will never happen again. " Evelyn said with her best 'please forgive me' face.

"I know you won't. Now you said she just started officially driving?"

"Yes sir."

"And this is your car?"

"Yes."

"Well, I'm going to give you a warning since your mother helped me out in a court case of mine, last year."

"Oh thank you sir! I really am so thankful."

"I know you are. Now you ladies get home safely."

"Okay. Thanks again!" Evelyn called as he handed her a slip of paper and got in his car.

As soon as he was out of sight Evelyn sternly said," Katrina, get out."

"What?" Katrina asked.

"Get out. We're switching places."

"We're just two minutes away from Beth's house."

"Katrina. Get. Out." She instantly got out of the car and they traded places.

"I'm really sorry Eve. I didn't mean for you to get in trouble," Katrina apologized.

"You never mean to do anything, do you Kat? Just drop it, okay? I was lucky this time, it's not going to happen again," she said seriously as she continued to stare intensely at the road in front of her.

"Sorry," Kat whispered again.

"So how's life as a social worker going?" I asked.

Noah beamed at me and answered,"Actually, really well."

"I helped this kid find a foster home and..." I knew it was rude not to pay attention but I couldn't help it. I kept thinking about the partner project. How was I going to act. The "cool" girl, that doesn't care about him and just wants to get the project over with? Or the kind girl, who does care and possibly flirts a little. Never mind, definitely the first one because A. My natural instinct around him is to kind of be mean and B. I have no clue how to flirt. Why was I even thinking about this, why should I like a guy I know nothing about?

"So anyways, what about you? How's life as a high schooler going?"

"Wonderfully," I lied.

"Oh and from next week onwards I have yearbook on Monday, Tuesday I have debate, Wednesday I have volleyball, and Thursdays I have student council meetings. They're all after school, so I'm going to need the car."

"Whoa, whoa, whoa. Hold up for a second. First of all, you made the volleyball team?. Aren't you too short for that? And second of all, well, there isn't a second of all. But seriously, you? Volleyball?" He teased me.

"Shut up, I barely made it. But I need to have some kind of sport on my college résumé. Cheerleading, their skirts are too short for me and soccer requires too much cardiovascular endurance. Same thing with basketball, plus the fact that you really do have to be tall with that sport," I replied.

"Are you sure this isn't too much for you? This seems like a lot of stress,"

"Yeah, it is. But it'll be worth it," I replied.

"Does all this have to do with what mom told you because I'm pretty sure this isn't what she meant," He told me while leaning against the kitchen counter.

"Well, I'm pretty sure it is. So can I have the car or not?"

"Oh, right. That's a no," he said plainly.

"What?"

"Sorry kiddo, but I have work on weekdays. You're going to have to find a ride with someone else."

"Ugh, fine," I said and then walked to my room.

"It's Saturday Beth! We've got to celebrate our first week of our last year in High School!" Kat yelled over the phone.

"No thanks Kat, I've got a lot of homework," I said while lying on my bed.

"You've got to be kidding me. You couldn't have gotten that much."

"You'd be surprised."

"Come on! Eve and Shaun said they're coming too! It's just a party! You can leave whenever you want to," Katrina pleaded.

" I thought Eve was still mad at you?"

"Nope, it's all better. You know as well as I do that Eve can never hold a grudge."

"Your house?" I asked.

"No way, my parents would kill me. It's at some rich girl's mansion. The whole school's invited! Bethany, when was the last time you went to a party with us?"

"Last week."

"Not including you're great aunt's 90th birthday," Kat said.

"I think it was freshman year?"

"Exactly!" Katrina exclaimed, happy that she got her point across. Wow, I really was pathetic.

"Fine, I don't think my brother will have a problem with letting me go," I gave in.

"Yes! I'll see ya at 5," Katrina said excitedly.

"I thought you said the party started at 8?" I questioned.

"It does but knowing you, you'll come in jeans and a baggy sweatshirt. Which is simply just not allowed!" Katrina dramatically exclaimed.

"Sure, whatever. See ya then." I hung up the phone and quickly ran to the living room. Noah was sitting on the couch looking over some papers most probably for his work. I sat down next to him and he suddenly looked at me like I had two heads.

"Alright, what do you want?"

"Ah, you know me so well."

"Can I go to a party tonight?"

"Whose house?"

"Some girl from my school."

"Some girl? Are Eve and Kat going?"

"Yup."

"Be home by 11. And take the car. Make sure you drive, not Kat."

"Thanks," I said and started to walk back to my room.

"Beth!"

"Yeah," I turned around expectantly.

"I'm trusting you. Don't get drunk, don't let anybody drive whose drunk and most of all, be careful."

"Got it."

*****

"You look so pretty Bethany!" Kat said proudly. I stood in front of my mirror, completely shocked at what I was seeing.

My long black hair was curled and I had red lipstick on with long curled eyelashes. Kat insisted on at least a little eyeshadow that was barely noticeable. I had on a beautiful navy blue, lace, sleeveless drees. With a crocheted, beige cardigan over it. Kat brought the dress to let me borrow and she warned me if I ruined it, she would kill me. Kat wanted me to wear heels but much to her dismay, I just wore some brown combat boots.

"Thanks, and you look gorgeous too!"

Katrina's hair was straightened and her makeup looked absolutely perfect. Not too much but too little either. She was wearing a knee length, royal purple dress with a lace back and a pair of simple black pumps to go with it. We walked out of my room and Noah was standing there waiting.

"You guys look amazing. Have fun," Noah said as we walked out the door.

"But -"

"I know, I know. Not too much fun," I laughed as we both got in the car.
