Chapter 36 - Fast Lane

I was scared as hell after leaving my parent's house the other night, knowing Nick had to have seen the resemblance between Haley and I. Especially since we barely spoke on the way back to the hotel, but he wasn't mad.

More or less, he was intrigued I think with the fact that for the last five years, I've pretended that the child I gave birth to was my little sister. To me, it wasn't intriguing. It was just how it was. I didn't think of Haley as my daughter, although at times I can see Tony in her and that petrifies me. She has both of our tempers. She has my outgoing personality.

And my mother thought she had a tough time trying to control me. I have a feeling that Haley is going to be worse.

I'm just glad Nick wasn't mad that I kept it from him. In fact, he indulged me with some secrets about him that I never knew. As scary as it sounds, I think it made us closer.

Plus the fact that Carter the cat is crazy about Carter the guy. He keeps wanting Nick to hold him. It's going to kill me to leave him with my parents again when we go on the cruise, but we're going to come back through Charlotte for a day and get him and then head to California.

I was just thankful that my Mom liked Nick and even my step-father seemed to like him. They never liked the guys I dated before and Nick is the first that they have liked. So it makes me feel better about everything and the fact that they're supporting me moving to California now that they know I'm not just moving there to blow my money away.

"Holy shit, look how fast that car is going!" Nick shouted as we stood on pit road at Charlotte Motor Speedway, watching someone drive with my cousin in the Richard Petty Driving Experience where normal people can drive race cars. "Have you done it before?"

"A few times," I smiled. "I got up to 160 here."

"Miles per hour?" he asked as I nodded. "Holy shit."

I had taken Nick around Charlotte, even taking him by Joe Gibbs Racing where I used to work. The girls I worked with there's eyes went hella wide when I walked in with Nick. Today was our last day here. We were getting up in the morning and heading to Miami to relax a little before boarding the New Kids cruise the next day.

"Alright Nick, you ready?" my cousin Shane asked as he got out of the passenger side of the race car. He shook hands with the guy who had just driven the car and walked over to Nick.

"I'm ready," Nick said, leaning over to kiss me quickly on the lips. "If I die, I give you permission to date AJ."

"You're not gonna die," I laughed, watching Nick as he walked over to the car with Shane, climbing into the window and into the driver's seat. "Make sure his HANS device is tight!" I told Shane as he helped Nick put his helmet on and then fastened him up.

"Gotta hurry this up," Shane said, walking around the car to climb into the passenger side. "We've got some cars testing here soon."

"Oooh, who?" I asked as Shane gave me a quick glare before disappearing into the car.

"Hey," I heard as Nick drove off in the car. I looked over, seeing Tony standing there with his race suit in his hands. "I'm testing here today."

"God, why didn't Shane tell me that?" I asked, crossing my arms over my chest. "We'll be gone shortly."

"Who's driving?" Tony asked as I stood there, not saying anything. "Oh God, don't tell me it's that blonde. Are you really with him? Still?"

"Yeah, Tony," I said, looking over at him. "I bought a place in California and I'm moving there. We're dating. I love him."

"You love him?" he asked as I looked out to see Nick drive by quickly and I smiled.

"And he loves me and he's not ashamed of me like you were," I said, looking at him. "You should probably go before they pull back up."

"I hope he makes you happy," Tony said as I snorted and looked away. I looked out at the race track for a minute and looked back over where Tony was standing to see that he had walked away.

I couldn't help but walk slowly through the airport beside Donnie, making him walk slower too. I really didn't want him to leave, but he had to.

"You're slowing down." Donnie commented, stopping walking all together to face me.

"I know. I'm hoping time is slowing too." I pouted at him. We'd already checked his luggage in. Now he was waiting for me to let him go so he could go through security.

"I know, I wish it was too. But after I leave you I want time to go as fast as it can so we can be back together again."

I smiled and wrapped my arms around him. "I agree with that. Just wish you didn't have to go."

Donnie leant down and kissed me softly. "I know, me too."

We kissed a little while longer before a boarding call for his flight was announced. I pulled back reluctantly and pouted. "This sucks."

Donnie chuckled. "Just a few days baby. I'll call you when I land... unless you want me to text. You might be sleeping."

I shook my head. "No, call. It doesn't matter. I love you." I clung to Donnie as we kissed once more before Donnie pulled back again.

"I gotta go baby. I love you too." He stroked my cheek before walking into the entrance to security. I watched him go through, giving him a wave as he turned around to look at me before disappearing around the corner.

And the moment he was gone, I let my tears fall.
