Warm scarf

As she neared the hospital entrance, Ava shivered as she saw a heavy snowstorm outside the glass doors. The last thing she wanted was cold Chicago weather. As luck would have it, Ava forgot her hat, and her phone was dead. Even though Connor had promised to pick her up after her shift, she couldn't even call him, and as it happened, Ethan took her shift early, almost forty minutes.

Not daring to go outside, Ava shoved her already icy hands deeper into her pockets, not warming at all, even while still indoors.

"Good night, Ava" Natalie smiled, she was with Will, who also said good night.

"Bye" she said, visibly upset at Connor's absence. And all because of a sudden and complex operation that only she was called to. She was glad, though, that Connor could take a break from work.

Exhaling noisily, Ava finally left the building, blinking at the sudden gust of wind that tousled her hair for a second. She tried to brush them from her face with trembling fingers as she moved blindly toward the parking lot, only hoping that at least she wouldn't slip on the frozen road.

After sorting out her unruly hair, noting that she was sure to get a haircut one of these days, Ava raised her head, immediately bumping into the man.

"Sorry-"

"Ava, you're shaking!" Connor shook his head, taking Bekker by the arm, leading her faster to the car and putting her in the front seat.

"Connor, how long have you been here?" Ava asked, blinking and feeling the warmth of the man she'd been missing all day.

"About an hour, and the house is empty without you" Connor said easily, taking Ava's cold hands in his, rubbing them together for quick warmth. "You, as usual, set the phone to zero, and I decided to arrive in advance. As you can see, I was right".

"I'm glad, very glad" Ava admitted with a wide smile. "I missed you so much in surgery".

"We're together tomorrow" Connor said, reaching into the backseat and pulling out a gift bag.

"What is it?" Ava asked, curious about the little surprise, still not used to Connor's frequent attention, which was shown in unexpected gifts, for no reason at all, just because he loved her.

Connor pulled out a rolled-up yellow scarf. Draping it over Ava's shoulders, he wrapped it carefully around her neck, leaning down to kiss on the lips in addition to the gift.

"It's to keep you warm, my sunny girl" Connor said softly, gasped as Ava clung to him, clinging to him.

"Connor, I love you so much" Ava murmured contentedly, feeling the soft scarf with her hands, settling comfortably on the seat, still holding on to the warm gift. "Why don't we go to the coffee shop we were at a week ago?"

"We have to get up early" Connor said uncertainly as he left the parking lot.

"I want cinnamon pretzels" Ava insisted, pursing her lips and hiding half her face in a wide, thick scarf, smelling the faint scent of Connor on it.

"Only for a short time" Connor conceded, grinning faintly as he watched Ava enjoy the new item like a small child.

"Of course" Ava chuckled, giving Connor a smug look. "And why aren't you as malleable at work as you are now?"

"I have a similar question" Rhodes grinned, pausing at a traffic light and turning his piercing gaze on Ava. "Why are you, Dr. Bekker, so unruly and uncompromising at work?"

They both laughed, bumping noses as they tried to kiss each other.

"Dr. Rhodes, You know better than anyone how submissive I can be" Ava teased.

"Someone's going to arrange for me to change my route home" Connor warned, swallowing noisily, always easily tempted by Ava.

"Between the pretzels and you, I'd definitely prefer you, Connor," Ava said, mentally thanks to her seat belt, she stayed where she was when Connor abruptly parked on the side of the road.

"I'm flattered, Ava" as he turned to face her, Connor couldn't wait to get home, clinging to the scarf, unbuckling his belt so that he could pull her onto his lap and press his mouth to hers, kissing hungrily, holding her buttocks tight.

A sun scarf lay on the next seat as the two lovers enjoyed each other, gasping for hot air despite the cold outside the car. Ava chose the right way to keep warm in the Chicago winter, knowing that a knitted scarf will save her in moments without Connor, which will still be too little, because he is always there.
