You stared at your reflection in the mirror, the dark green floor length dress hugging your every curve perfectly. Your hair was pulled back from your face in a half up half down updo, and beautiful arrow shaped gold earrings were dangling from your ears, but even though you looked this beautiful you were the farthest away from happiness that you could possible be.
You could hear a knock sounding on your door, before it opened and Clary popped her head inside. "[Y/N], are you ready" she asked as she stepped in. "By the angel you look absolutely stunning" she exclaimed as her eyes swept along your figure.
You flashed her a strained smile before you turned to look at yourself in the mirror. "Thank you Clary, so do you" you said as you looked at her through the mirror as she walked over so that she was standing behind you.
"Is everything alright?" The readhead asked when she saw the saddened look in your eyes.
You turned around so that you stood face to face with Clary, furiously blinking back the tears that were welling up in your eyes. "I'm fine, he's marrying her and I will just have to accept that. He's meant to be with a shadowhunter, not a mundane. It's just a bit hard to get that into my skull" you confessed to your best friend, her face falling when she realized that watching this was going to be torture for you.
"Hey, we don't have to go if you don't feel up for it. We can leave the institute and stay at Magnus' loft for the night instead" she said as she took a hold of your hand.
"I appreciate it Clary, but I have to see this. I think it will be a good way to get some kind of closure" you said before you took a deep breath and squeezed Clary's hand.
➰
You were seated in the front row with Clary by your right and Simon at your left.
You were staring up at the alter where Alec stood talking with Jace. His white suit enhanced his handsome features and made him look even more handsome if that was even possible, and you could feel a twinge in your heart when he looked over at you, a smile gracing his lips when his eyes met yours.
You and Alec had previously been involved and you had never been as happy as you had been with him. You two just understood each other on such a deep level, as if you two had been meant to be. But your relationship was cut short however when Maryse found out and forbad Alec from ever being alone with you again. She would not tolerate her son being with a mundane, so naturally she arranged the marriage between him and Lydia, and there was nothing you could do but sit and watch as the man you loved woved to spend the rest of his days with someone else.
Your gaze was ripped from Alec's when you felt a hand grasp yours, and you turned to see Clary giving you an encouraging smile.
You swallowed the big lump that was forming in your throat when the doors leading into the hall were opened and Isabelle walked in with the bracelet meant for Alec laying on a cushion in her hands.
You squeezed onto Clary's hand as she reached Alec and Lydia began to walk down the aisle in a beautiful white gown, a large smile plastered across her face as she looked at the people along the aisle.
She reached Alec and you watched in horror as they exchanged jewelry and she reached out to grasp a stele. The crystal with the inscripted rune on it lit up as the stele touched the surface and you could feel a wave of emotions crash over you when she reached out to take Alec's hand.
You just couldn't watch this anymore, you ripped your hand out of Clary's and stood up from your seat. You hurriedly rushed down the aisle, feeling everyone staring at you before you ran out the doors, and hearing Clary call your name as they shut behind you.
A sob escaped past your lips as soon as the doors had shut behind you. The realization of actually losing Alec hit you and you covered your mouth with your hands as tears streamed freely down your cheeks.
You couldn't stay here and see Alec everyday knowing that he could never be yours. You had to leave.
You quickly set off towards your room, running as fast as you could in your heels, your vision blurred with tears as you made your way down the long hall.
You could hear the doors leading into the wedding venue burst open from afar, before pounding footsteps were heard heading in your direction.
After only a few seconds a hand clamped down on your upper arm and you came to a halt. You were spun around only to come face to face with the groom himself.
Just seeing his worried face made another wave of tears roll down your cheeks as your stared up at him through blurred vision.
"Alec, please let go off me. I'm leaving" you choked out as you tried to free your arm from his grasp.
"Leaving, why?" He asked as his eyes darted back and forth between your own.
"Because I can't watch you from afar everyday for the rest of my life knowing you're married to Lydia and I'll never be able to call you mine" you exclaimed.
"I'm not marrying her"
"W-what?" You stammered out in utter disbelief as you stared up at the tall man before you.
"Seeing you run out of there just made me realize that I'd never be able to go through with the wedding. As selfish as it may seem I don't want you to find someone else, I want you to be with me" Alec confessed as he reached out to wipe some tears away from your cheeks.
"But Alec, what about your mom, she was the reason this happened in the first place" you said as you gazed up into his brown eyes.
"I don't care. I honestly don't anymore. I won't allow her to control my life anymore, I'm in charge now and I'm deciding that I want to be with you" he said as his hand released your arm and went around your waist. "So what do you say we don't give a shit about what anyone else thinks and do this thing for real, starting with you becoming my official girlfriend" he said as he pulled you closer to him, your palms coming up to lay against his suit clad chest as you glanced up at him.
You could hear the commotion sounding from down the hall as your friends began to call out your names, probably wondering where you had run off to.
You smiled up at Alec, ignoring the calls of your friends as you snaked your hands around his neck. "Is say we do it" you said, your smile widening when you saw Alec's lips twitch upwards into a smile.
You stepped up on your toes and pressed your lips to his, his arms tightening around your waist as the kiss immediately deepened.
A warmth was spreading in your heart again and for the first time in a long time you were happy again, because you had finally gotten the man of your dreams back, and this time you intended to never let him go.
A/N
So I binged The Haunting of Hill House with my mum last weekend and I never thought it'd be that good, but damn was I wrong. I still haven't caught up with the haunting of Bly manor tho.
