You tiptoed through the corridors of the institute towards Alec's room.

You were trying to hold back your sobs but were failing horribly as tears streamed down your cheeks in a seemingly endless stream.

When you finally reached Alec's door you looked both ways before knocking.

You could hear the sound of sheets rustling from inside before a bleary eyed 15 year old Alec opened the door.

"[Y/N], what are you doing here?" He asked as he looked at you with tired eyes.

You sniffled lowly and glanced up at him. "Can I come in?"

Alec stepped aside to let you pass, his features twisting into that of worry when he saw your tear stained face.

"What's wrong?" He asked as he closed the door behind the two of you.

You turned to face him and felt tears spring up in your eyes again as you met his concerned gaze.

"We're leaving" you said as you wrung your hands together.

"What?"

"My parents have been stationed at the Istanbul institute, we're leaving in the morning" you explained sadly.

"But, you can't leave" Alec sputtered out in disbelief as he raked a hand through his tousled hair. "Tell your parents to let you stay"

"Alec, I can't. They've made it clear I'm going with them" you said as you looked up at the brunette.

Alec bowed his head, and sniffled lowly.

You quickly stepped up to him and reached out to take his hands in yours.

"Hey, we'll still keep in touch. I won't let you forget about me" you said and tried to capture his eyes.

After a few seconds Alec finally looked up at you. "Nothing has to change right, we'll still be best friends?"

You could feel a sting in your heart at the best friends phrase, but forced a smile onto your lips. "Of course, we'll always be best friends"

....

5 years later:

It had been five years since you had last stepped foot into the New York Institute, and oh how you had missed these familiar hallways.

And even though such a long time had passed your feelings for Alec had never disappeared, sure you had dated other people but none of them had made you feel the way Alec had, and you two hadn't even been a couple.

You took a deep breath where you stood just inside the doors, your gaze sweeping across the large room before you hitched your bag up on your shoulder and walked in.

Almost immediately Isabelle spotted you and squealed before she ran over to you.

She almost crushed you in a bear like hug, and you laughed as you returned her embrace.

"Why didn't you say you would come back?" She asked as the two of you parted and she pulled back to take in your much older self.

"I thought I'd surprise you, where's Jace and Alec?" You said with a smile.

"Jace is on a mission with Clary. I'll give you all the deets later" she said when she saw the confused expression on your face at the mention of Clary.

"Alec's in the office" she added.

You thanked Isabelle before you headed off towards the office.

When you stopped outside the door you took a deep breath before you knocked and entered.

You could feel your heartbeat speed up when you spotted him hunched over a stack of papers on the desk.

His dark hair was just as messy as when you were 15 and he still wore all black.

"If you have more documents just put them on the desk" he said without looking up from whatever he was reading.

"I'm afraid I don't have anything with me" you said, and smiled when you saw him stiffen in his seat.

He slowly lifted his head and looked at you with widened eyes.

"[Y/N]" he mumbled out in disbelief.

"Hi" you said as you dropped your bag to the floor and looked at him expectantly.

Alec quickly pushed himself up from his chair and walked over to you, his arms wrapping around your smaller form as soon as he reached you.

You sighed in content when you breathed in his still familiar scent.

"I can't believe you're  back" Alec spoke up after a minute or so.

"It feels good to finally be back. It feels as if everything has stayed the same here" you said as you looked around the office that now belonged to the man standing in front of you.

You turned to face him again and felt your eyes widen when you saw a ring on his finger. "We'll, some things clearly have" you said trying to hold back the sadness that suddenly welled up inside you.

Alec looked down at the ring before his gaze shifted back up to meet yours. "Yeah, I suppose it has"

"Who's the lucky girl" you forced yourself to ask, not even wanting to know the answer.

"Her name's Lydhia. We got married just a couple of months ago" he said before he pulled up the sleeve of his shirt to show the marriage rune.

You choked back a sob and forced yourself to smile. "I'm happy for you Alec" you said.

It seemed like everything had changed after all.
