The sun pushed its way to the nursery den, two kits scrambled in the den, flinging moss all directions. A reddish she-cat watched in disapproval, her green eyes glittered with worry.
"Don't worry," a ginger she-cat beside her breathed. "Soon they'll be out of here before you can even say 'mouse'!" she looked at her sympathetically.
The red she-cat let out a long sigh, watching the kits push each other down and let out yowls of triumph. Leaf-fall was leaving soon, and leaf-bare would come.
"I hope it comes soon enough." the reddish she-cat mewed bitterly.
The other queen pressed against her flank. "Don't worry Goldentail." she meowed. "It's not as bad as small kits wailing all day."
Goldentail blinked down, she stared at the ground. Would they really leave soon enough?
A ginger she-kit pushed down a gray tom, her lips curled back and her ears drew back. The gray tom stood at his paws, slamming her down with his paws.
"If you're gonna battle each other go outside!" Goldentail snorted.
The ginger she-kit walked limply outside, her tail between her legs, the gray tom by her heels.
"It's okay Foxkit." the tom soothed. "Soon we'll be apprentices and battle for real!"
"I hope you're right Flatkit." Foxkit responded sadly.
Sunstar, CloudClan's leader bounding up the high-rock. She looked down at Foxkit.
Is this the day? Foxkit thought excitedly. She had been waiting moons for this!
"All cats old enough to catch their own prey gather here beneath the high-rock!" she yowled.
Foxkit pressed herself by Flatkit's flank. Flatkit looked at her excitenly, his amber eyes glowed.
"Today is the Gathering!" Sunstar announced. "Streampaw and Joypaw will go, Mosspelt, Berryheart,Thrushfur, and Bramblenose will come as well. The rest of you will stay."
"What?!" Foxkit exclaimed. "I thought it was my apprenticeship!"
Joypaw a brown tabby looked at her. "You're not even six moons yet!" he breathed to her.
Foxkit let out a hiss, when would she be apprenticed? She always wondered how the Gathering was, how the cats interacted and how much will go. But that won't happen in moons! she sneered in her mind.
Flatkit was already retrieving to the nursery den, Foxkit followed him, her tail was bushed out and her hackles were almost rising.
Goldentail looked at the other queen, Bumbletail, the one that was chatting with her before. Flatkit curled himself in some soft moss, his bedding was lined with blue jay feathers.
Foxkit curled beside him, she imagined running in the forest, catching prey and battling.
She wondered how the elders warriors and queens used to describe their apprenticeships! So cool! Foxkit was excited again, her fur laid back down.
A long breezed drove by camp, cats were Gathering by the camp entrance chatting about how excited they would be, especially the apprentices. Streampaw's silver fur glowed in the moonlight. Joypaw pressed beside her, his tail curled by his paws in the cold.
Foxkit imagined that she was going as well, padding in the forest. She imagined that the forest was leafy green just as her mother had explained. Small animals scratched the ground for prey.
"Flatkit!" Foxkit hissed in his ear.
Flatkit flicked his ears, he jumped up in alarm. "What?" he sneered, his fur bristled.
"Let's follow them to the Gathering!" Foxkit suggested.
"No way!" Flatkit responded angrily. "As much as I want to, isn't that breaking the warrior code?"
"We don't know a lot about the warrior code!" Foxkit objected. "If we did break it, wouldn't StarClan accept our apology?" she tilted her head, had she won the conversation. "But if you won't come I will!"
She jumped up and ran out, Bumbletail and Goldentail rested by the fresh-kill pile, they shared tongues and talked about kits as always.
"CloudClan head out!" Foxkit jumped in alarm, she spinned around facing Sunstar pushing through the gorse tunnel to head out.
"Come on!" Foxkit urged Flatkit.
"Goldentail and Bumbletail will see us!" Flatkit protested.
"Let's head through the small hole in the nursery." Foxkit suggested. "Then we'll find our way after that."
Foxkit pelted to the nursery, her fur bristling in excitement. She scratched a small dirt hole, as some soil spitted out. She pushed through the hole, soil clung to her pelt. She would groom it later.
