Foxclaw slept in the warriors' den, there wasn't any cat to warm her. Then suddenly she was woken up by a yowl. Foxclaw ran out, unsheathing her claws. Had CliffClan attacked them?
Then Berryheart was climbing up the MeetingBoulder, his yellow eyes blank. Sunstar scrambled behind him, her fur was pricked up. Foxclaw scrambled over to Flatwhisker, who was sitting outside the nursery.
Streamcloud had poked her head out of the nursery. "What's going on?" she asked.
Flatwhisker shrugged. Suddenly Lilykit and Smokekit started wailing. "Hush kits." Streamcloud murmured softly.
This was unbelievable! Back then Streamcloud was as grumpy as a badger! Now she was softer than moss!
"Why does Berryheart seem so— " Flatwhisker's meow was cut off by Sunstar.
"Let all cats old enough to catch their own prey gather here beneath the MeetingBoulder!" Sunstar yowled. "Berryheart had given up his position as deputy!"
Murmurs of confusion rose between the cats. Foxclaw's tail swished, she wanted to become deputy! She had to! Then she would have helped the Clan be stronger! She would have changed it completely for good!
Foxclaw dug her claws in the ground. "I need to be deputy!"
"Why?" Flatwhisker hissed. "There are so many cats worthy for this position, like Bramblenose. He could be a good deputy."
"I would have been a great deputy." Foxclaw snapped. She turned her gaze back to Sunstar.
"I hope StarClan agrees on my decision on making a new cat deputy." Sunstar yowled. "Berryheart, thank you for being the best deputy you could be, CloudClan owes you. Now, our new deputy will be . . . Flatwhisker!"
Foxclaw's stomach churned. Flatwhisker! Why him? Foxclaw had been much more experienced than her brother. She even has an apprentice for StarClan sake!
Flatwhisker bounded across the clearing, climbing the MeetingBoulder. "Thank you so much." he purred.
The cats yowled his name, Streamcloud had poked her head out of the nursery again. Her yowl the loudest, Foxclaw bristled. Why had Sunstar chosen him? She didn't want to see the flea-bag again! I would have been a better deputy! I would have!
Icepaw padded over to her. "Can we do something today—ouch!"
Foxclaw turned, her flank was crusted with blood. Foxclaw sighed. "No, you're hurt."
Icepaw sighed, she ran over to the nursery again. Berryheart leaped down the MeetingBoulder, Foxclaw ran up to him. "Why did you give up your position?"
"Are you saying I can't?" he retorted.
Foxclaw flattened her ears. "No! I'm asking why."
"Maybe I just didn't want to be deputy." Berryheart hissed.
Don't be a deputy! Foxclaw's paws prickled. Who wouldn't want to be deputy? "Why?"
"Because I don't!" Berryheart snarled.
"But why?"
"Maybe I don't like the position! Maybe I don't want to be a leader!" Berryheart yowled. "I know it seems cool! But I'm just not the right cat!"
He pushed into the warriors' den, Foxclaw dug the ground with her claws. Now that Flatwhisker was deputy things would change, things she wouldn't like . . .
Foxclaw tasted the air, the scent of mice lingered. She felt hungry and she waited to sink her teeth into the mouse. She crawled closer, her tail flat on the ground. Flattening her ears, she waited, the mouse was eating a seed. Foxclaw narrowed her eyes, it was her time to strike!
