Chapter 24

Foxclaw let out a yowl of pain, her kits were coming! Hollypool scrambled over to the nursery, Fernpaw pelted beside her. The green bundle of herbs were wrapped carefully for her.

Streamcloud pulled her kits back with her. Lilykit pricked her ears up with confusion. "What's going on?"

Smokekit narrowed his blue eyes. "I dunno."

Streamcloud gave her kits a few strong licks. "Hush kits, Foxclaw's delivering her kits."

"From where?" lilykit mewed.

Foxclaw gasped, StarClan help me! Pain seared through her pelt, Fernpaw had her paw lightly over Foxclaw's flank. She could hear the apprentice comforting her. "Shhh. They are coming, take a deep breath."

Foxclaw wheezed, how could she take a deep breath with all her pain in her? Goldentail was coming out of the warriors' den quickly, and she entered the nursery. Laying beside Foxclaw, she gave her raspy licks over her ear.

"It may be painful, but it's worth it." Goldentail assured her, Foxclaw closed her eyes tightly.

Foxclaw waited for what seemed moons, she kept glancing at Hollypool and Fernpaw who watched her, Foxclaw lapped wet moss that Goldentail had brought her. She seemed too tired to even lift her head.

What were Fernpaw and Hollypool doing? "First ones coming!" Hollypool meowed, Foxclaw unsheathed her claw. "Hang on Foxclaw!"

Foxclaw took a deep breath, she dug the ground with all her might. Letting out a yowl. "It's a tom!"

Foxclaw looked down, Fernpaw had a little kit in her jaws. She dropped him down besides Foxclaw. "Groom him."

Foxclaw gave her first kit a few licks. Hollypool narrowed her eyes. "Another one!"

Foxclaw prepared herself for the pain, this time it wasn't as painful. A she-cat dangled from Fernpaw's jaw. Foxclaw pulled her closer to her, giving the kits licks.

"Two more!" Hollypool warned.

Foxclaw hissed. "Just let it finish StarClan!"

Goldentail helped Foxclaw groom the kits. "There Foxclaw, you are so close! You can do it!"

No I can't! Foxclaw gasped.

Fernpaw scrambled up to her, another tom. Goldentail helped again, Hollypool narrowed her eyes. "One more!"

Thank you StarClan! Foxclaw wheezed, Hollypool now came with the kit. She dropped it beside Foxclaw, another she-cat. Fernpaw fed Foxclaw a few poppy seeds, then left.

Flatwhisker scrambled inside the nursery, Joysong behind. "What's going on?" he demanded.

Foxclaw recognized another cat, Bumbletail. The ginger she-cat had come as well. "Congratulations Foxclaw."

Foxclaw let out a purr. She narrowed her eyes at Joysong, the tom didn't flinch. Flatwhisker let out a sigh. Joysong stepped closer. "Can I see them?" he whispered.

Foxclaw flinched back, she unsheathed her claws and swiped at his face. "No!" she growled, her hackles rose.

Goldentail stood up. "Sorry, you know queens. Overprotective of their kits."

Joysong flattened his ears, doubt flickered in his eyes. "No because she hates me."

Goldentail nudged him. "You can tell me outside." she assured him, they stepped out of the nursery.
