Foxclaw heard Streamcloud grooming her kits with raspy licks. She lifted her head, hearing the slow steady breathing of Mistlekit, Lightkit, and Pinekit. A cold breeze of the morning swept through camp, she shivered. Fluffing out her chest fur, peering through the bramble entrance. She saw hunting patrol leaving, her stomach growled for food. She didn't notice she was hungry like a badger.
Pinekit's ear swished up. "Don't leave me!" he wailed.
Foxclaw licked his ear. "I won't, come let's go get something from the fresh-kill pile. You get to choose."
Foxclaw stood up, padding out the nursery. The sun was rising and cats were beginning to slide out their dens. Foxclaw nodded her good mornings to them, but they didn't respond. Instead they stared at Pinekit.
Foxclaw flattened her ears, she quickly picked him up by his scruff and hurried over to the fresh-kill pile.
Pinekit wriggled, and tumbled down with, "oof!" Foxclaw prodded the pile. Pinekit wriggled near, sinking his small teeth into a squirrel and a rabbit. Foxclaw sighed. "Why not a mouse?" she prodded the small creature.
Pinekit shook his head. "You said I could choose what I wanted!"
Foxclaw nervously looked back, she saw Joysong wriggling into the nursery. "Hurry up Pinekit!" Foxclaw urged.
Pinekit took a thrush in his jaw, walking slowly because of his tiny feet. Foxclaw grabbed him, he dangled from her jaw as they barged into the nursery.
Foxclaw dropped Pinekit, waving her tail protectly over her two other sleeping kits. Joysong sat down, he gave his paw a lick drawing it over his ear.
Foxclaw twitched her whisker, what did he want? Joysong didn't reply, he lifted his head and spoke. "I won't do any harm." he meowed, mischief in his voice.
Streamcloud curled her lip back. "Joysong you better leave," she retorted. "We don't accept toms like you here."
Joysong gasped. "Streamcloud but . . ."
Streamcloud turned her head. "No buts." she hissed.
Foxclaw waved her tail, wrinkling her nose. "You tried to kill my kits and you killed one of them, why do we want toms like you here?"
Joysong drew his ear back. "I didn't!"
"I saw you on the tree when we killed the badger." Foxclaw growled. "You killed Hopkit! And this time you won't succeed." she unsheathed her claw, swiping her paw at his face.
Joysong yelped, blood trickling from a huge scratch that she made in one of his eyes. Letting out yowls of distress, he scrambled out of the nursery. Foxclaw scoffed, that'll teach him to stay away from my kits.
She nuzzled her kits, Mistlekit and Lightkit woke up. They tasted the air, padding closer to the thrush Pinekit took out. "Hey you didn't tell me you had this!"
"Did to!"
"Did not!"
Foxclaw watched her bickering kits. Now that Hopkit was gone, what would she do? She missed him very much, but she knew that he was in a better place now. He was in StarClan, with Flatwhisker, Pebbletail, and Thrushfur.
She trusted those cats, and she knew that he was having fun with other kits. And she knew that he was watching over her . . .
"BreezeClan patrol in our territory by the river!" Foxclaw heard Bramblenose wail.
She barged out the nursery, Sunstar scrambled on top of the MeetingBoulder. Mosspelt on a lower rock besides her.
"What will we do?" Streamcloud wailed. "We need to keep our kits safe if they come near us."
