All her life, Jack had trained to be the perfect assassin, the perfect mafia, the perfect daughter of Dominic Cabrera. And she liked to think that she had become the person Dominic had envisioned her to be. If she were not, well, he would have told her bluntly. He said things as they were, he did not sugar coat his words.
Most times, she thought that she did not deserve Dominic as a father. He was a good man, prior to what people thought about him being the mafia boss. He did not just kill without reason, without being provoked. She did not know what her life was like before he adopted her when she was two, they never really talked about it because she did not want to know.
The one time she had asked, he had told her never to ask again, she was his daughter, and that was all that mattered. But she strove for his approval, to see that proud glint in his eyes whenever she did something right. And so, she trained everyday, with or without her instructors.
Jack had never questioned her father’s decision to keep her hidden because she knew that there was always a reason behind everything Dominic did. And, because he did not like to be questioned. He always thought everything through, a habit she had picked up.
Ever since her return, he had begun to give her assignments, and she did her best to not fail him. She never wanted to give him any reason to regret adopting her.
To other families, normal was having a job and a loving husband, a nice house with white picket fences and a golden retriever. The picture-perfect family.
Her normal was guns and missions, and she loved everything about it. She would never change anything about her life.
Walking over to the bar, Jack leaned against the counter and requested the bar tender to send a drink up for her. She was at Dominic’s high-end club in the heart of LA- the Vibe club. She had no idea why he named it that, but it did not matter, it brought in money, and was also a front for distribution of the cannabis. She was there because Dominic had sent her to deal with a small wanna be gang leader.
And when Dominic says to deal with someone, it means kill him. He had only given her the facts of the meeting, all she had to do was collect a piece of diamond and get rid of him. Prick had tried to play Dominic once by giving him a fake piece. Stupid move on his part.
Did he really think Dom won’t notice?
He had to be either dumb or just plain stupid. And she thought he was both because he was now five minutes late to the meeting. Jack huffed and folded her jean clad legs on the table in the enclosed booth. From her vantage point, she could see everything going on down below.
Taking a rolled up blunt from her pocket, she lit it and inhaled deeply and blew the smoke through her nose. It was not a habit; smoking was just something she did when she was annoyed or agitated. It sometimes helped to calm her down.
The bartender dropped her tequila and quietly left. Minutes later, Jose, her personal bodyguard led a tall lanky looking man into the booth. She looked at her watch, he was fifteen minutes late. The man was scared and looked like he could piss himself any minute.
Good, he should be for keeping her waiting.
But then he saw it was just a girl, and he relaxed slightly. The blue lights made him look sick and unpleasant.
He sat opposite her on the round led sofa and spoke, “So, the great Dominic sends a little girl to do his job for him?” he sneered at her. She said nothing as she blew smoke through her nostrils.
“Who are you?” he asked with a frown.
Jack took her time responding, “No one you need to worry about.” Oh he needed to be worried alright, but what was the use when he was going to be dead in minutes. Dead people do not worry.
It was another rule taught her by Dominic: never reveal who you are. Makes it harder for them to find you.
“Where is Dominic?”
Jack sighed. Not only was he daft, he asked a lot of stupid questions. She cleaned her nails on her shirt.
“Dominic does not have time for little deals,” she said, “Now, do you have what he wants?”He nodded and slid a briefcase over the table to her. She opened it and saw a white diamond gleaming. She handed it over to Jose and he disappeared with it.
Silence ensued between them as they stared at each other. Or rather, she stared at him. The only thing that could be heard was the loud booming music in the background. Jack stared at him intently. The idiota could not even hold her gaze. He squirmed in his seat and looked away.
She liked that. Liked that her stare could make him uncomfortable. Another rule of hers, always keep eye contact. Looking people in the eye made them uncomfortable, especially the guilty ones. It gave her a hand over them.
Jose returned with the briefcase and nodded at her. The diamond was genuine. She gulped down her tequila in one shot and dropped the blunt in the ash tray before standing up to stare down at the man.
“I gotta go bucko, but I’ll be sure to let Dom know how nice and cooperative you were,” she turned to leave, and he sighed and wiped the sweat off his brow.
Jack suddenly turned around, and he tensed once again, “oh, and Dominic says hi,” she whipped out her gun so fast he did not see it coming and shot him twice in the chest. The silencer making a soft pop.
She unscrewed the silencer, tossed it to Jose and slipped the gun into the waistband of her dark blue jeans. Picking up her black gloves, she wore them and pulled the black leather jacket tighter around her. She ran a finger through her black hair then she took the briefcase from Jose.
“I’ll meet you back home, and get rid of the body,” she said without looking at it and left the booth, leaving the club through the back into the alley behind where she had parked her bike. She placed the case on the seat and strapped on her helmet, swung her leg over and pulled up the kickstand.
Then she secured the briefcase before switching on the ignition. Revving the cycle and speeding off.
