You are stuck in the backseat of the drive to campus. You are so ready for college that you've stopped fighting your parents to let you take your car. You have been 18 for a few months, but you don't think your parents will fully accept you being an adult until you're living on your own. Saying goodbye to your childhood best friend had been hard, but other than him you were looking forward to putting the whole town in your rearview.

Top of that list of things you were eager to leave behind had to be your boyfriend, Vinnie. He'd been your high school sweetheart since freshman homecoming but things had really gotten toxic the last few months. It only got worse after you'd broken up with him.
Your parents had helped you pack up everything you were bringing into a rolling suitcase, so when you arrived on campus you were able to say your goodbyes at the car. You walked into your building and looked around how state of the art it looked in spite of the 100 year old exterior. As you made your way up to the second floor you realized everyone else came with boxes of stuff. In an effort to prove your independence you'd refused to shop with your mom dictating everything you bought and just packed clothes, makeup, and $500 to buy everything else you might need in town.

You walked down the hall filled with parents, siblings, and kids that looked just as overwhelmed as you when you realized you couldn't find the slip that showed your room assignment. You were pretty sure it was 241 and when you reached out for your doorknob, the door swung open. You came face to face with a light brown haired, ridiculously cute boy who towered over you by almost a foot. He smiled down at you: "I think you're probably looking for 240, across the hall. All the guys are on this side of the hall and girls over there."

He laughed and started to introduce himself when your phone rang. Even though you didn't answer it, your cute new neighbor just flashed you another smile and headed off towards the elevator. You thought to yourself: Yeah we definitely are ready for this new year.
