Soon enough it's your last night in town. His sister had convinced you guys to have a party before heading back to college and leaving her bored once again. Her parents were usually pretty strict on what she did unless she was with Josh. His parent's went out with Josh's grandparents and had taken his little brother with them, leaving the house to just a group of teenagers on New Years Eve. You were surprised that so many people showed up considering Josh mentioned most of his closest friends wouldn't be home for break.

An hour later, everyone is pretty tipsy. You and Olivia are in the kitchen, snacking when you look up and see a beautiful blonde girl sitting next to Josh. Her arm is draped across his shoulder and they are laughing. You instantly recognize her from the tagged photo you'd seen on his instagram months ago. You start to make your way over, and overhear her whisper in Josh's ear:
"Don't forget last year, you promised me you'd be my midnight kiss again this year."

He's so busy talking to Sam, that he doesn't even seem to acknowledge her which should make you feel relieved

He's so busy talking to Sam, that he doesn't even seem to acknowledge her which should make you feel relieved. Then you remember that he hadn't even noticed you'd moved into the kitchen with Olivia half an hour ago. You called Josh's name and he looked up and smiled then went right back to his conversation with Sam. You knew he wasn't drunk, but had a few drinks so maybe he wasn't thinking clearly, but why was he letting her hang all over him. Was it really just a habit? He was back home with his old friends and his old life: complete with old girlfriend.

You decided to not make a scene, but you were starting to feel really uncomfortable. His sister tried to reassure you that Josh wasn't interested in his ex at all and probably didn't even notice she was sitting next to him.

You: "It's not that she's sitting there, but she has her arms all over him and he hasn't stopped her long enough to even look for me."

Olivia: "He's just caught up in talking to Sam that's all."

You: "You don't understand. You don't know how we are with each other. This is just so different than what I'm used to at home. We are so in sync and always attached. He usually notices something is wrong with me before I've even noticed."

Olivia: "I'm going to go say something. She's my best friend so it's my place to be the one to tell her to back off."

You start to tell her that isn't necessary when you look over and see Mads massaging Josh's shoulders and whispering in his ear. He's still facing Sam, but he's laughing and including Mads in the conversation. She looks up at you and smirks in your direction and you can't take it anymore.

You excuse yourself and head upstairs to calm down but the longer he doesn't come up to check on you, the more hurt you start to feel. It's like ever since she walked in the party, he forgot you were even there. You can't take it anymore and grab the bag you'd already packed for tomorrow's flight home and write a note thanking his parents for a wonderful week and making an excuse why you had to leave early.

You sneak down the stairs and out the side door. You climb into the uber you'd ordered and send him off in the direction of the airport. They are able to easily change your flight to the last flight of the night back home and you curl up in a chair in a nearly empty terminal to wait. You can't help but feel so empty and wonder how things went so wrong, so fast.

You and Josh had gotten so close and you thought he told you everything. He'd opened up a lot about his ex. There had been no hard feelings, just a mutual breakup. You'd talked to his sister about it enough to know it wasn't as mutual as he'd thought, but he still seemed completely over it all even if Mads wasn't.

*OLIVIA'S POV*

She went up to check on her brother's girlfriend after giving her a little space to calm down. She found the letter sitting on the bed instead and her bags were gone. She went downstairs and Josh still hadn't even noticed anything. She completely understood now that the problem was Mads was trying to get to Josh and even if he had no intention of letting her, he hadn't told her to back off either. She tried to get his attention, but when he ignored her, she stood right in between his and Sam's conversation and asked:
"Dude... where's your girlfriend."

Mads: *giggling*
"I arrived about an hour ago."

Josh looked at her and shook his head finally remembering how annoying she could be and proceeded to look around the room:
"I don't know? Is that a trick question? I thought she was with you."

Olivia: "Well she was until you'd ignored her all night in a house she isn't used to, surrounded by people she doesn't know."

Josh: *jumped up*
"Oh God. I just got distracted catching up with Sam. Is she upstairs?"

He started to race up the stairs, but she stopped him by calling out:
"No, dumbass. She left. She took her bag and she's at the airport by now."
