My life is like an unbalanced equation. It's there's always too much of something on one side. Sometimes it's easy getting it to balance out, but other times, there is almost no way to balance it. There's always too much hydrogen or too much oxygen or carbon on one side.
There's always too much or too little of something.
"That was so easy, I'm so fucking stupid," I said to myself slamming the desk. I was doing SAT questions. I got a 1430, but I know I can do better. My math and grammar scores are really good, but then my reading and comprehension sucks.
"Woah, calm down. You're being a little dramatic." Amukta laughed out making fun of my misery.
"This isn't funny. I'm supposed to be applying to colleges in almost nine months, and I need at least a 1490," I told her.
"Maybe, instead of looking at the right answers and then moving on, READ THE DAMN EXPLANATION!" she said.
"I stopped doing that a while ago."
"Then try figuring out why it's the wrong answer and why the right answer is right and then read the explanation. It'll make more sense," she said and then sighed. "Let's go get some icecream at a near buy icecream shop. Come on, let's take a break," she said.
"Fine," I said getting up and following her to her car.
It was a week till Halloween.
Three weeks had gone by since homecoming.
I was going to a Halloween party with Amukta which was an hour away because she thought the change would be fun.
She's driving.
She convinced me to let her buy me a costume. It took her two weeks. I hate that she always buys me things and I can't really give her much in return. I told her I'd pitch in though, she can't buy the entire thing on her own.
"Your costume is coming in next week!" she said excited.
"What is it?" I asked. I was genuinely curious, but she wouldn't tell me. Knowing her, it was probably something sparkly. I'm not sure how I felt about that, but I don't care. She's going out of her way to buy me something, so I'm thankful.
"What flavors for the pretty ladies?" the guy at the register asked.
"I'll take a pistachio, and she'll have a cookie dough," Amukta said and I smiled at her.
"Isn't pistachio for old people?" the guy asked and I made a face.
"Have you tried pistachio?" I asked him.
"Well no, but," I cut him off.
"Then, shut up," I said.
"Your total is eight forty," he said and I handed him the money before Amukta could and she gave me a look.
"Girl, I wanted to pay!" she said and I shook my head.
"You buy me things too often."
"I'm Indian? I always argue over the bill," she said laughing and it reminded me of this one time in middle school when our families went out to dinner together and fought over the bill before we decided to split it.
"I know, but you can always change your habits," I said bopping her nose and she scrunched her face.
"Yea yea, whatever," she said and we grabbed our orders and went to a table.
I couldn't keep it in any longer.
"I slept with Atlas."
She was silent.
