Adam
God it’s still raining. I couldn’t help but laugh at the fact that it was chocolate milk.
I had insomnia, which was relatively new. Normally I could sleep like a rock, but tonight to many things were running through my mind. I sat up and blinked for my eyes to get used to the darkness. I put my knees up to my chest and hugged them. I sighed in exasperation. The questions in my head were wearing me down. I closed my eyes and rested my head against my knees.
“I’m sorry,” a silent voice coming from next to me said. I jumped and looked next to me. The silhouette of Kennan was sitting next to me, her blue eyes were illuminated in the darkness. “I was just a bit mad…” Kennan let her voice trail away silently. I guess she doesn’t want to wake up Ty.
“You're right, I don’t.” Kennan replied,
“You can read my mind?” I whispered.
“Don’t act like it’s a new concept,” Kennan shrugged, “but yeah…”
“So...you know that Ty doesn’t trust you?” I asked slowly.
“Well...duh,” she was speaking softly, without her normal sarcastic tone, “I know that none of you trust me. I’m okay with it now...I just…” she looked down, then suddenly she pulled her head up to look at me questioningly, “Do you have your memory from before you came here?” she questioned me.
“Um, yeah? I think so, why?”
“I don’t mean just in general, I mean from, like, a couple days from before you came to when you woke up here.” she looked very keen to hear my response.
“...wow...you’re right...I can’t remember anything.” I tried to think back, but no dice. I couldn’t remember anything within that time period. Ow...It hurts to think about…
“It should.” Kennan replied, reading my mind.
“What do you mean, ‘It should’?” I wondered, quoting her.
“Um...he erased your memory…” she said quietly.
“By he, you mean...the King?”
“Yeah.”
“Can you tell me who he is?”
“I wish.”
“Why not?”
“I don’t feel like dieing.”
“Wait...you mean he’d...kill you?” I stuttered over my words at the new found facts. Kennan didn’t reply, she just sighed and looked down.
“I could- we could protect you though...if you told us.” I tried to help.
Kennan looked up, “He made this world, he could easily destroy it...and everyone in it.” her eyes were stone cold. This is the most serious I’ve ever seen her. “Thanks,” she replied to my thoughts. “I try to stay happy for people...even when I feel like shit.” she had an empty smile on her face.
“Don’t worry…” she let her voice trail like she wanted to say more.
“What do you mean?”
“I don’t have mine either.”
“Your memory?”
“No, I just brought up something totally different.” Kennan said with her sarcastic tone returning.
“Well then” I smiled slightly at her tone.
We talked all night about life before this, telling stories and making-fun. Until the sun started to rise it was still raining. Kennan raised her hand and looked at me and grinned. She snapped her fingers. Miraculously the rain faded. All around us people started to get and talk to each other, not noticing Kennan. Next to us, Ty started to stir. He opened sat up and before he could open his eyes Kennan disappeared with a flash of grey light.
“What’s up?” Ty asked while still rubbing his eyes.
“Um... when we re-group I need to tell everyone something.” I responded.
“You stay up all night?” he wondered aloud.
“How’d ya guess?”
“Lucky.”
“The rain stopped.”
Really? Wonder how that happened…” Ty’s question startled me, almost like he was purposely asking it. But his tone seemed legit.
I still can’t help but think about Kennan and the King guy’s threat. Does he really wanna kill her if she tells? Is she just leading us into a trap…? No, she was serious...I hope.
