Ten still couldn't shake the thought that was implemented in his brain yesterday. He had gone to sleep with the doubt on his mind and then woken up with it. Lucas never showed up that night even when he had called for him. That only made Ten's doubt increase. It was like his mind was fighting with itself.
One half was saying to trust Lucas, he was only here to help why would he betray you? Lucas has done so much good for Ten and he is second-guessing himself. Lucas would be disappointed in you if he found out you didn't trust him after all that has happened, Ten told himself.
The other half was sending him red warning flags, saying that he should have questioned him more. This side of the war in his head thinks that Ten and Lucas got along too quickly. Even if Lucas was a higher being, why has everything gone to shit? The logical part of this side of the argument is that, why isn't everything magically better now that Ten has his own guardian angel?
During this inner conflict, Ten didn't even notice Lucas sitting right in the middle of his bed.
"Oh! There you are," Ten said quietly.
He felt a wave of discomfort run through his veins as he looked at the other. He felt guilty at his own thoughts. It looks like Lucas could sense it, of course, he could. Now knowing that Lucas could pretty much read his thoughts and sense his feelings made him somewhat uncomfortable.
"What's wrong, Ten?" Lucas asked, sliding to the edge of the bed.
Lucas held his arms out for Ten, which he gladly accepted. The warmth of Lucas's arms felt nice and familiar. As they always did, but with the constant nagging at the back of Ten's head, he couldn't enjoy it.
"It's nothing to worry about," Ten said, he was lying to Lucas and himself.
"If it's really worrying you, you should tell me," the angel said. "I can fix it!"
Lucas's eyes were wide, and he had this hopeful look on his face that he usually has. It didn't lesson Ten's doubt for a second. Ten removed himself from Lucas's arms and sat next to him. They were faced each other at the side of the bed with Lucas's big hand on Ten's thigh.
"I've just been doubting things recently," Ten frowned at his words.
"Doubting yourself?" Lucas said, lifting Ten's face with his index finger resting on his chin. "You know I think you are-"
"No, it's not me," Ten said.
"Then what?" Lucas asked. Ten could feel his hand making small circles on his thigh, this is not the time to be distracted now.
"It's.." Ten hesitated. "It's you, Lucas."
The hand on his thigh suddenly stopped along with the other hand that was caressing his cheek. Lucas pulled back to look at Ten, his emotion unreadable. It seemed like everything had stopped at that moment, as Ten could hear the ringing in his ears.
"Me?" Lucas asked, his pitch of voice raised at the end. "Oh."
Ten got up from Lucas's heavy stare, there is no way he can tell Lucas all of this while sitting down.
"Yea, I've just been thinking about everything lately," Ten started.
He didn't know where he was going with this sentence. "I've just been second-guessing myself recently, I guess."
"Second-guessing what?" Lucas asked.
"If you are such a high and mighty being, then why is everything going wrong?" Ten blurted out. "I don't mean to sound rude, but why, Lucas?"
"So you're saying you don't trust me anymore?" Lucas said with his arms crossed.
"No! I do trust you," Ten was pacing lightly around the room at this point.
"Well, obviously not since you are questioning my motives," Lucas said. His voice was raising and Ten didn't like that.
Ten stopped pacing to look at Lucas in the eye. "I do trust you, it's just what if it is not what I think?"
"What do you think, Ten?" Lucas scoffed at him.
"Are you mad at me?" Ten asked with disbelief, he didn't understand why he was getting so mad at him.
"I'm not mad at you, I'm just disappointed," Lucas said in a cold tone. "Why are you just now acting like this after all we have been through?"
"I have done so much for you, Ten."
"I know you have and thank you for that, but what-"
"After all I've done and you are treating me like this?" Lucas stood up, his height towering over Ten. "I have helped you immensely, do you realize that?"
Ten took a step back as Lucas was slowly inching closer to him. Soon enough his back pressed against the wall in his bedroom. Ten had never been good at conflict, he felt like running away but he knew Lucas would just find him again.
"I know you have helped me," Tears were threatening to run down Ten's face as he spoke. "I don't know why I feel this way, Lucas."
"What about that night?" Lucas said. "Are you going to question my motives for that too?"
"No! That was perfect, Lucas." Ten stuttered.
"You're lying to me," Lucas said.
"I'm not lying, Lucas!" Ten said to him. "I can't help my thoughts."
"Whatever, I believed you changed," Lucas brushed Ten off. "I guess I was wrong."
"I have changed! I swear, I just-"
"You just what?"
"I'm only telling you this because I love you!" Ten squeaked out.
The room went quiet again. Ten could feel the heat rush to his face because of his lousy confession. He didn't know he was going to say that, but he did mean it.
"I'm sorry I was second-guessing you, I just had to talk to you-"
"You love me?" Lucas asked. His face had a shocked look to it with a dark underlying tone.
"Yes! I do, I love you even after all of these doubts, Lucas." Ten said. "After everything that has happened since you came to me, I realized just now, that I love you."
Lucas brought his hand up to touch Lucas's shoulder. "You, love me," he said, it was more a statement this time.
Ten nodded at Lucas, leaning into his touch. The warmth of Lucas's hand had gotten warmer, tighter even.
"I guess I played the angel role too well then," Lucas said, a smirk on his face.
"What?" Ten asked. He was getting slightly more concerned over the grip on his shoulder.
After a beat, the grip became tighter, then his vision was blurred. Ten noticed he wasn't in the apartment anymore. No, now he was standing in his old house the one that had burned down. The burnt down walls of his room contrasted the pale skin of Lucas standing strongly in front of him.
"What are we doing here?"
Lucas only smirked at him. This face was something Ten had never seen this look on him before. The coy and insincere expression on his face frightened Ten. The only word to describe the look on Lucas's face was devilish.
