Broken Smoking

Kai sat on the front porch, a lit cigarette between his fingers.

His eyes were glazed over like new cut glass.

Kai breathed in the smoke.

A small smile appeared on his lips.

Oh, how he loved that feeling.

Kai had started smoking some time ago, after Lloyd got hurt badly in a fight.

Kai couldn't protect him and it was eating him up inside.

At first he tried to burn himself to ashes, but it didn't work. You can't just incinerate yourself.

So he called it an accident and sad he lost control over his powers.

Then when he was at a shop he grabbed a pack of cigarettes.

He's been chain smoking in every free minute and most of the time he was crying while smoking.

The panicky kind of crying.

Lloyd was in a coma.

Kai lit another cigarette.

"Kai? The fuck are you doing?!", Cole suddenly asked from behind him, shock on his face.

"What does it look like?", Kai asked, wiping his eyes.

"hm. You know smoking kills, right?", Cole then replied.

Kai coughed a little.

"So does being a Ninja. I think smoking is less dangerous.", Kai said dry.

"Kai, you will be happy, I promise. Lloyd woke up and he asked for you", the black Ninja sighed.

Kai put his cigarettes away and nodded.

"Kai!", Lloyd cheered when the red Ninja entered the room.

Kai smiled softly.

"Hey Green bean", he said but there were tears in his eyes.

Lloyd sat up in his hospital bed and made grabby hands.

Kai leaned down and hugged him.

"You smell like smoke, were you training?", Lloyd asked.

"Yeah, I want to save you next time", Kai smiled.

"Oh Kai, you're not blaming yourself, right?", the green Ninja looked up with sadness in his gaze.

"Just a little, I mean I did give you a promise", Kai laughed awkwardly.

"Kai, do you know why I got hurt? Because I made a mistake. I underestimated the enemy. It was all my fault, you couldn't have protected me better then you did. Who knows, if you hadn't been there, maybe I'd be dead!"

Kai nodded.

Lloyd went back to sleep after 10 minutes, so Kai left the hospital and lit another cigarette.
