(Y/n)'s POV

I looked at the band on my finger with contempt. An item that once brought me overwhelming joy and love now pierced my heart like a thorn on a rose. Tears kept on coming, though I hardly noticed anything.

The first sign was the work party. His company was having some fancy office party, and naturally, he took me along as his plus one. I had kept to myself most of the time, staying to the side, drinking a glass of wine, occasionally talking with random wives or employees. Meanwhile, Vernon stood with one of his female workers, laughing, joking, and having the time of his life. He stuck to her side the whole night, only leaving her to quickly check on me before immediately returning to her.

The second sign was the phone calls. Every time I walked up to him, he was on the phone with someone, and as soon as he saw me, he hung up. At first, I didn't mind. I thought he was being polite, or that his call was genuinely done. How naive I was.

The third and final sign was the bracelet. It was beautiful. We were out Christmas shopping, and when I went to go get the Lego set Colin had been asking for, he went to the jewelry section. He thought I didn't notice, and kept looking around, fidgeting. Naturally, I presumed he was on the lookout for me, not wanting me to spoil my own gift. He didn't notice me standing to the side with the large box of bricks in my hands. I made my way up to him and he quickly escorted me to the next area, but not without putting the box in his pocket.

When we got home, he left the box in his jacket and, against my better judgement, I took a peek inside the box. It was a beautiful silver bracelet, with a small heart charm on it. My heart soared at the thought, because I had told him I needed more silver jewelry. He didn't seem to hear me say it, but that silver bracelet in that God forsaken box seemed to wash all my worries away.

And on Christmas Eve, he handed me a small box. I was excited, I finally got to get the beautiful bracelet. The kids sat next to us, opening up their own gifts. He watched with anticipation as I opened the box. However, I did not find the silver bracelet in that box. Inside was a cheap pair of gold earrings, a pair that I already had. I tried to keep up my happy facade, not wanting to break down in front of the kids. Surely, the bracelet was still under the tree, and I just hadn't found the box yet. Alas, the night went on, and no silver bracelet was found. It didn't take me long to connect the dots, and I excused myself from the room, claiming my stomach was feeling weird from the food we ate.

Standing in the bathroom, the band on my finger became hot and heavy. The two toothbrushes next to each other, the two bath robes, the two pairs of slippers, they all seemed hollow. Like they knew what was happening behind my back. They knew, and they sat there, and they watched.

That night, the family was attending the school's Winter Holiday Extravaganza. It was a combination of all the Fine Arts programs in one giant show. The sound of young voices fell upon deaf ears. The lovely melodies from the strings of the orchestra sounded like a cacophony of nails against a chalkboard. The only thing that snapped me out of my daze was when my two lovely children walked out onto the stage to perform their part of the Christmas play. I wasn't surprised to see Vernon in my peripheral vision, looking at a women who looked familiar. Lord knows what she was doing at our children's school, but lo and behold, a beautiful silver bracelet with a heart-shaped charm sat on my husband's employee's wrist as she watched Vernon with sinful delight. I almost lost it right there. I held my breath as Colin and Olivia finished their play. The parents all applauded, some moving into a standing ovation. I stood up, but my clapping felt insincere.

Thus, the long after-activity wait began. The kids had to change, get their stuff, and would inevitably fool around with their friends for a bit. In that time, I looked at Vernon and tapped his shoulder. He averted his gaze from the woman to me.

"I need your advice on something." I said to him. An apprehensive look fell upon his face.

"My wife (Y/n) asking me for advice? Something must be desperately wrong." He said in a jokingly amused voice. I nodded, a tight-lipped smile on my face.

"If you found out your husband of ten years was cheating on you, would you confront him about it right away to save the last shreds of your dignity? Or would you say nothing, not wanting your kids to be harmed by their father's infidelity, but live with the pain of knowing that you are no longer loved by the one you poured your heart and soul into?" I said, a couple tears falling down my face. I kept a calm and level voice, not wanting to attract any more attention. He sucked in a breath of air, a crestfallen look on his face.

"I've had the suspicion for a while now. When I found out my husband gave a silver heart bracelet to another woman, my suspicions were confirmed." I added quietly. He looked around desperately, as if trying to find an excuse that would cover for him. Luckily, Colin and Olivia came up to us.

"Colin! Olivia! Oh, you two did so well! Colin, you didn't tell me you had so many lines! I'm so proud of both of you." I gushed, giving them both a big hug.

"Let's go get some ice cream." I told them, wide smiles appearing on their adorable faces. They both instantly agreed, pulling me out of the auditorium in order to get to the car faster. After walking for a bit, they noticed Vernon wasn't following.

"Momma, why isn't Dad coming with us?" Olivia asked. I hesitated for a minute, keeping up my happy facade.

"He... had some business thing come up. The office is having him work on a big project, so he might not be around as much for a while."
