(Y/n)'s POV
"How do you feel about that boy?" The officer interrogated me.
"He is nothing but a friend. We're neighbors. He was just helping me carry my groceries into my apartment." I replied, the story rehearsed in my head since Soobin and I got caught together.
"It says in your file that this is not your first time being here for hanging out with him." The officer said accusingly. I tried to remain calm.
"Like I said, he's my neighbor. He often helps me with carrying things, and last time, I was getting him medicine because he was sick." This guy just didn't seem convinced.
"I have to go consult with the other officers to make sure your stories check out. Stay here please." I nodded, not moving an inch. I kept my facial expression the same. I knew that I was being watched from behind the one way mirror. They were analyzing me. The smallest change in body language could show them that I was lying.
After about 30 minutes, the officer came back in.
"You're free to go." He said monotonously. He obviously saw through me, but he couldn't arrest either of us just based on assumptions.
"Thank you officer. I'm sorry for causing trouble. Don't worry, everyone knows that it's against the law to love. We wouldn't dare break the laws under any circumstance." I told him sweetly before walking past him. I kept up my facade until I got back home. I could hear Soobin pacing around in his apartment, mumbling to himself. I knocked softly on the thin wall between our apartments. His footsteps went quiet before gradually getting louder, walking towards the wall. I placed my head on the wall, listening.
"Are you okay? Did they do anything to you?" He asked me.
"No. What about you? Did they do anything to you?"
"Not really." My stomach dropped.
"What do you mean 'not really'?" I rushed, scared that he was hurt. There was silence for a minute.
"Run away with me. We could survive out there." He pleaded softly. I had to strain my ears to hear.
"But-"
"Please. I can't live a life in this place. If we could just get past the fence, we would be in open territory. They wouldn't be able to hurt us." I sighed.
"You make it sound too easy. There are guards flocking every inch of fencing. The police are everywhere, watching." Again, there was silence. Soobin had always hinted at us running away together, away from this damned society.
"Just think about it, okay? My bags are already packed." With that, I could hear his footsteps walk away from the thin wall between us. I stayed in place, staring blankly at the floor.
A few days passed, and Soobin hasn't talked to me. It isn't necessarily out of the ordinary; every time we get caught, we keep our distance for a couple weeks so to not arouse any suspicion. However, his words lingered in my head, repeating over and over again. Of course, I hate it here. It's not just love that is outlawed, but freedom in almost all aspects. There are curfews, segregation in daily activities by race and gender, a strict social hierarchy, and a push for social homogeneity. We technically still have freedoms, such as freedom of speech, but if an officer hears something they don't like, you risk the safety of yourself and anyone who has ever come in contact with you. It's a miracle Soobin and I are still alive with how many times we've been caught with each other or preaching against this society. Each day, I feared that something bad would happen to one of us.
I made up my mind. This was no way to live.
I went to go pack all of the essentials immediately. Clothes, food, matches, lighters, water, drinks, flashlight, batteries, anything that I could think of that would fit in my large gym bag. I packed it to the brim before making my way towards the wall. I knocked on it.
"Soobin, let's do this. Let's leave." I told the wall. I waited. No answer. I knocked again, louder, and still, no response. I started to worry. After my fifth attempt, I gave up. I paced around the room for almost thirty minutes, worrying about Soobin.
Where could he-
A loud knock coming from my front door interrupted my thought. I panicked, hiding my bag and rushing to the door. The first thing I saw was a police officer's outfit.
Shit.
"Mind letting me in?" The familiar voice asked. My head shot up to look at the person's face.
"Soo-"
"I said, mind letting me in?" He said, a little more aggravated. I then remembered the cameras in the hallway. For all the security guards knew, he was a regular cop investigating me.
"Uh, sure." I said, gesturing him to come in. I quickly closed and locked the door behind him. He pulled me into an embrace. I quickly wrapped my arms around him, holding him as tight as I possibly could.
"I was so worried." I whispered to him.
"I'm sorry. I had to sneak around a bit so no one would see who I was. Anyways, we don't have much time." He pulled away from the hug and started looking around.
"I have a friend who works as a mole in the police. He gave me an outfit, car, handcuffs, and a gun. I'm gonna handcuff you and take you out to the car," He found my bag and picked it up before continuing, "Then, I'm gonna drive toward the closest police station to the fence-" He stopped to look at the time.
"No more time to explain. There are radios in the car, so keep your head down and don't say a word. Even if I start questioning you, keep quiet. We can't risk being caught." Soobin explained. I just stood there, taking everything in.
"Okay." I nodded, looking him in the eyes. He quickly came up to me and pulled me into a passionate kiss. When we disconnected he whispered, "I love you."
"I love you too." He put the handcuffs on me, but they were loose enough for me to pull my hands out of. He then picked up my bag and took me out of the apartment, roughly pushing me once we were back into the camera's view. We made it to the car with no suspicion aroused. He threw me into the back of the police car and put the bag in the passenger's seat, along with two other large bags. The ride remained silent for the most part, aside from him "questioning" me. I kept my head down, afraid that someone might recognize me if they were to look inside. I didn't want to risk bringing any attention to us.
The siren blared loudly, making me jump. The car immediately sped up. I could see the fence, straight ahead, just a block or two away. There were only two police cars at the fence, which I found strange. Usually, there were about five or six police cars all together. Soobin kept on speeding towards the fence with no intention of stopping. My eyes widened. The fence is electric...
"The fence is electric!" I yelled. We were only a couple of meters away. The cops at the fence brought up their guns.
"Duck!" Soobin yelled. Glass shattered from the shots aimed at the car. Soobin quickly swerved, now driving right next to the fence. Before I could ask what he was doing, I saw the construction site that he was racing towards. There were tons of huge, ramp-like structures, one of which was facing us. Just like that, we were off of the ramp and into the air. Soobin had turned the car's wheels to be going away from the city at the last couple of seconds, shooting us up and over the fence. The landing was rough, and by a miracle, the car was still upright and intact. Soobin slowed down slightly, still heading towards the forest that surrounds the city.
"You did it!" I yelled, ecstatic. I could see a triumphant smile on his face. He finally slowed down, eventually coming to a halt. He jumped out of the car and opened my door, pulling me into a giant hug. He twirled me around in the air, laughing happily. I joined in, not able to contain my joy.
"Look, I didn't tell you before, but there are some people in the woods that I know. They set up a little town in here for runaways. Their names are Yeonjun, Beomgyu, Taehyun, and Huening Kai. They have everything we need there." He told me, not able to contain his enthusiasm. I just pulled him down for a kiss. We were finally out of that hellhole, together, never to return.
