I felt my breaths getting slower, but I forced myself to keep breathing. I only had to push myself for a little bit longer. I had to do it for Riot, for Ava. Many hours had passed since Lacy and I had last talked, but I knew she wouldn't bail on the plan.
"Lilith." I hear Lacy say.
"Im awake. They should be coming soon, get ready." I say. I hear her walk around, and I force myself off of the floor and onto the bed frame.
The door unlocks right on time, and I force myself to cry out in pain as I push onto my burned arm. The man throws the plate on the floor before looking at me.
"I need help, I can't feel my arm." I say and he comes near me.
"Cant have permanent damage, or else your price goes down." he says and I nod.
I use my leg to drag the tray over, watching the man as he squats down to look at my arm. I quickly take it out of his grasp and grab the tray, smashing it against his head with all the force I could give into it. He looks stunned for a second until he falls back, hitting the ground as he falls unconscious.
I rush out of the room and into Lacys to see her knock the guy out, and look at me.
"Lets go, we need to leave now!" I say and she nods before we rush to the door.
We were the last to get fed, so the other girls rooms were shut and the hallway was empty. She tries the first code, but it doesn't work. I look behind us as she types in more, eventually getting it right.
"Hey! Get back to your cells!" I hear a man say and I gasp while I run out of the door, taking Lacys hand in mine.
I hold my ribs with one hand as we run across the street and into the woods. I could feel the snow falling from the sky and onto us as we ran. I feel the rocks and sticks cutting through my socks, but I brush the pain away and I run deeper into the woods.
I feel Lacy start to slow down, but I don't.
"Come on, we need to keep going before they outnumber us." I say.
"Can we slow down?" she says.
"No, we have to keep running." I say, dragging her behind me more. I
hear rustling coming from the beginning of the forest, telling me they just entered the forest. I look around in every direction, every other option but south being the woods. I go south, heading into the snow.
"Were going to freeze!" Lacy says.
"We either freeze or we get shot, and I think this might be the better option." I say, forcing her to run up the steep mountain.
I duck when we reach a covering, which will hide us from the woods. We stay there until I hear them run past us, going farther into the woods. It's not until I get back up that I realize how cold it is. The adrenaline was running off, and I could start to feel the effects of the snow.
I force myself to run up another hill, dragging Lacy behind me. I breathe hard, wrapping my arm around my ribs when I feel like I can't breathe anymore.
"Lilith, are you okay?" Lacy asks and I nod.
"Yes, lets go." I say, and I continue to run up the hill.
We continued like this until I felt like my ribs were going to explode, but we were almost at the top. We just had to get to the other side, and then we would be fine, out of eye sight.
"I- I can't do it." I hear Lacy say.
"No, we have to go, we have to keep going." I say, still dragging her.
