Chapter Six: Don't You Ever Wonder?
I walked into Bruce's lab on the ground floor of Avengers Tower. It was cluttered with papers and multiple chalkboards with complicated equations written on them. It looked like a foreign language to me. "Bruce?"
I heard a loud bang and then Bruce popped up from behind a lab table, rubbing his scalp and a small grimace of pain on his face. "Yes?"
"Did you sleep down here?"
He nodded and sat down on his rolling chair, his head in his hands. "Yeah. Nat and Thor have me working on something to locate Chthonic Magic."
My heart started thumping harder in my chest, "Oh? And how's that coming along?" I bit down on my bottom lip; a nervous habit I needed to be rid of.
Bruce messed with his hair, "Not to good. How am I supposed to find something I know barely anything about?"
I shrugged, "Ask Thor, he seems to know a lot." Ugh! Seriously Rora, you couldn't keep your mouth shut?
Bruce's brown eyes lit up with childish eagerness, "Yes of course! I'll see you later Isis!" And he was gone, the lab doors closing with a quiet whoosh.
"Wasn't that quite a fail? You just gave yourself away."
I turned to the reflective table top and stared down at Chaos, her bkack eyes connecting with my blue ones. "Oh shush up. No one wants to hear it from you."
She smirked, a row of perfect, pearly white teeth lit up her face, "Honey, only you can hear me."
"And it's so horrible. Way to annoying and a pain in the butt." I smirked back and walked out of the lab in search of Tony.
"Just because you walked away from a reflective surface, doesn't mean you can get rid of me."
I fake an annoyed groan, "And here I thought I was home free from you. High hopes I guess."
Chaos scoffed and turned her blonde, tight ponytailed head away from me, her chin held high, "Whatever."
I had rendered Chaos speechless? Way to be proud of myself.
I found Tony on his floor, tinkering with something and speaking to J.A.R.V.I.S, who is, as Tony explained, his AI. "Hey Tony!"
Tony jumped a few inches into the air, dropping the object and letting sailor like curses fall from his lips.
"Oh god, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to-"
Tony held up a hand, "It's fine. I was getting no where with it anyway."
I smiled and looked up to the ceiling, "Hey J.A.R.V.I.S."
"Hello Isis."
"Please, call me Rory."
"Rory?" Tony raised an eyebrow.
I shrugged, "It's a nickname I remember someone calling me."
Tony gave me a sad look, "Have you ever met your family?"
I tapped my chin and thought hard, "No. I don't even know if I have one." I really don't remember having two loving parents or even one. "All I really remember was being experimented on by S.H.I.E.L.D and when they thought it went wrong, I was passed on."
"Wow. Don't you ever wonder?"
I stared at the ground, Tony's words rocketing around my brain. Have I wondered? I grew up around the agency and they became my family, filling the void in my heart. Of course I've wondered. My eyes flicked up to his, "Do I have a family?"
