Chapter Four: Loki

Tony grabbed my hand and flew off into the city. The wind whipped my hair around my face and I laughed at the feeling of flying. This. Is. AWESOME! Tony landed in the middle of downtown where rubble was scattered across the streets and gaping holes were in building walls.

"Whoa." Creatures that were probably aliens walked out of the shadows followed by a tall man with slicked back, black hair and an evil glint in his eyes. "I'm gonna take a guess and say that's Loki?" Tony nodded and got into a fighting stance.

"I see you Avengers have a new member." His voice was monotone.

Something flew past my face and Loki dodged it at the last minute. The shield bounced off a nearby building and came back to Steve. "We'll take you down just like last time Loki."

"Come and get me Avengers." The alien creatures charged at us and we went to work, fighting them off.

I took down two aliens and saw Loki sneak away from my peripheral. No one else saw him so I ran after him into some empty parking garage. "Loki!"

He stopped in his tracks and turned to me, a smirk on his lips, "The newest Avenger, how wonderful."

"The name's Isis."

"I know your name midguardian. I also know the power you hold." I looked at him in confusion, my powers were like any other superhero. "You hold Chthonic Magic. The greatest magic of all. You could be a great savior or complete destruction."

My heart pounded in my chest. What did he possibly mean? Destruction? "What do you-"

"Isis look out!"

My body was thrown to the side and I looked to see where I was once standing was now a scorch mark and a small billow of smoke. Steve stood over me, holding a hand out. "Um, thanks." I stood up and brushed off my suit.

"What happened back there?!" Steve was in my face.

I stared at him with wide eyes, "I...Loki distracted me!" My anger heated up but then depleted as Loki's words swam through my brain. How?

I walked into Bruce's lab the next day and sat on one of the many tables set up, "Hey Bruce, I have something to ask you."

He looked up at me and pushed his glasses up his nose, "Yes?"

I hesitated, "Have you ever heard of Chthonic?" My teeth bit into my bottom lip as I awaited an answer. Bruce hesitated and rubbed his hands together.

"Yes, it's an ancient magic. It can bring destruction and complete chaos on Earth if used for evil. The only person I've ever heard of obtaining this ability is long gone. Why do you ask?"

My heart was pounding in my ears. I wanted to ask Bruce so many question. I was scared of myself, what if this got out? "Oh, uh, just wondering. I think I heard Loki say something about it yesterday."

Bruce's eyebrows shot up, "Why didn't you tell us sooner? This could be what he's planning. We must find who possesses this dark magic before Loki." Bruce grabbed my hand and rushed out of the lab, dragging me behind him. He gathered the Avengers in the briefing room. "Isis has some very important information concerning Loki's intentions."

I mentally glared at Bruce and laughed nervously, "Um about that, I overheard Loki talk about something called Chthonic Magic."

Thor dropped his cup of coffee and Tony spat out his whisky. Thor rushed over to me, "Chthonic magic? Are you certain that is what my brother said?" I nodded and Thor nervously bit at his thumbnail. "This is not good."

"Thor, what's going on?" Steve asked the Asguardian.

"Chthonic magic is an ancient dark magic used only for bad. Chthon was the inventor and is an extremely powerful magic. Anyone possessing Chthonic magic can manipulate and reconstruct the very fabric of existence and bring about total destruction."

Everyone was wide-eyed and slack jawed. "Who possesses it? Did Loki mention?"

They can't find out it's me. I'd surely be an experiment again. "No. He just said something about Chthonic."

Thor scrunched his eyebrows together, "I think I know a way of figuring it out. It's an ancient practice, but it should work."

Natasha stood up, "I'll help you."

I'm so screwed. My heart was probably leaving a bruise on my ribs as it pounded harder with every fleeting footstep of Thor and Natasha. Black dots danced in my vision and I gripped the edge of the table hard enough for the glass to cut into my hand. "Isis are you okay?" I blinked up at Tony, not comprehending what he said.

Something flashed in my vision, it looked like me, but her eyes were pitch. I let out a gasp when a red glow came from her hands. Chaos was the last thing I saw before I blacked, her evil laughter haunting me.

I woke to soft snores and a drip drip drip noise. My eyes felt heavy as lead and I practically had to pry them open. My eyes darted around and landed on Steve, he was asleep. I pondered the reasons why it was Steve at my bedside rather than Natasha or one of the Avengers I was closer too.

My door creaked open and Tony's head popped in. He smiled when he noticed I was awake. Tony's footsteps were light and barely made a noise as he padded across my floor. "Hey."

"What happened?"

Tony took the seat on the opposite side of my bed, "You passed out."

I tried remembering but all I saw was a flash of yellow irises. "Why?"

Tony shrugged, "You just started breathing heavily and you let out a scream as you fell. Steve rushed to your side." He nodded his head to the Avenger who hated me, "You've been out for a whole day, hasn't left your side."

I looked over at the blonde hair, blue eyed man in such confusion. Why would Steve stay? I thought he hated me. My eyes flicked back to Tony as he stood up, "I'll bring you something to eat, seeing as your probably hungry."

Upon hearing the word "eat" my stomach growled loudly and my face flushed a bright red. Tony laughed quietly, making sure he didn't wake a sleeping Steve and left.

Steve, staying with Isis?! *gasp*
I wonder what was going on with him.
