Chapter Seventeen: Do I Know You?

Tony:

"WHAT DO YOU MEAN SHE'S GONE!?" I yelled at Steve, pulling at my short hair as he read the note to us.

"Tony calm-"

I turned to Natasha, "Don't you dare tell me to calm down. My best friend just ran away. What if Loki or Anglos caught her?!" Now I was really freaking out. I could feel my arc reactor heating up from the rage and heavy breathing.

"Tony you seriously need to chill or you'll blow your reactor." Bruce laid a hand on my shoulder and looked me in the eyes, "Deep breathes. We'll find her. I promise."

I took Bruce's advice and took deep breathes. "How are we going to find her? Aurora's smart, she knows how to stay off radar, plus we have no clue if Chaos has taken over or not."

"We're the Avengers, we can do anything."

Aurora:

It's been two days since I ran away. I was hobbled up in some dirty motel room in uptown New York. It wasn't the best place to live, seeing as the place had mice and the paint was falling off the walls, but it was all I could afford and it'd keep me on the down low.

I felt bad for leaving my friends, but it was the only way to save them. I looked in the mirror and concentrated on my reflection. My hair changed from blonde to black and my complexion became sun kiss tanned. My eyes were now brown and I was pretty unrecognizable.

I grabbed my bags, credit card and phone and quickly made my way out of the hell hole. I slid on Aviators before exiting the motel and made my way to a better one.

It's now been a week since I went away. Every day when I go outside to my job, I see Thor flying in the sky, scanning the streets for me. Thankfully I could change my appearance and it'd make it harder for them to locate me.

I worked in a local bookstore, half a block away from my hotel and three blocks away from Avengers tower. Just because I was hiding from them didn't mean I didn't care. They were my family after all.

I was working the cash register when two familiar voices came across my ears.

"No Clint, you can't buy a comic on yourself. That's ridiculous." Natasha and Clint came into my line of sight, arguing over why Clint shouldn't buy the comic.

"That's unfair. You're buying a stupid romance novel, why can't I buy the comic?"

They made it to the counter, setting the books down, completely oblivious to my presence, "Why would you want to read about yourself?"

Clint shrugged, "Because I'm awesome."

Natasha rolled her eyes and turned to me. "Sorry about that."

I gave them a half smile, "No problem. Is this all for you today?"

"Yes."

I scanned the books and placed them in a plastic bag, "That'll be 16.50." Clint pulled out his wallet and a $20 bill. "Your change is $4.50. Thank you for shopping at Lana's Books. Please come again soon."

They were about to walk out the door when Natasha turned back around, studying me with her eyes, "You look familiar. Do I know you?"

My heart pounded in my chest, "No. I must have one of those faces. Just moved here from California about two weeks ago."

"Why New York?"

"Heard it was a great place, decided to see for myself." I smiled and Natasha nodded, turning around with a goodbye and leaving.

I let out a breath I didn't know I was holding and slumped back in my chair. That was close. I'll have to work on my façade.
