I took a closer look at the person who had just hugged and greeted me. A brunette girl in hot pants and a tank top stood in front of me. She was beaming at me and seemed so joyful and lively that at first I was worried whether she was perhaps high or mentally out of her mind. After all, we were here in an adolescent and criminal rehabilitation camp. In my eyes, this was really no cause for joy.
"Oh my God, another girl. Finally some female backup for us," she said enthusiastically.
"Jesus Daisy! Slow down or she'll think you're mentally retarded," an annoyed voice sounded. It seemed to belong to the other girl.
"Hey, she's new and needs to get to know everything first. If we greet her in your manner, she might as well give up," said the brunette girl, whose name was obviously Daisy, with a grin.
"She's right..." one of the boys laughed.
"Yeah, but seriously, Daisy... don't always run up to people like that and completely catch them off guard. Otherwise people will really think you're out of your mind," another boy said, also grinning.
Daisy stuck her tongue out at him with a grin before turning back to me.
"Sorry if I caught you off guard. I'm Daisy," she introduced herself and held out her hand to me.
This time I reacted and shook it as I smiled.
"Avery."
Daisy stepped aside and I noticed the others for now.
The other girl, was a little taller than me. She had long, wild, red curls that she had tamed with a blue headband so they didn't fall in her face. She wore glasses and had some tattoos on her arms.
Noticing my gaze, she gave me a curt nod.
"Roxanne," was all she said and I nodded.
The first boy stepped forward. He was brown-haired and a few strands of hair were hanging down his face, but he had combed them to the side. His eyes looked small and his smile looked as if he was in a beautiful dream. A bedroom smile is what my best friend Carlotta would have said.
"I'm Louis," he introduced himself as he shook my hand.
He pointed to the boy on his left.
"This is Niall."
Niall was blond and had a smile as beaming as Daisy's as he waved cheerfully at me.
I smiled too and gave a quick wave.
The last boy had raven black hair and a slightly darker skin tone.
So far he had paid little attention to my arrival. Now he turned his gaze briefly to me and smiled curtly.
"Hi, I'm Zayn," was his greeting before he turned his attention back to the logs by the fireplace.
"Hi," I greeted back shyly.
"Hey, don't worry, we don't bite, even if our group name says otherwise. We're the SSSP," Daisy smiled encouragingly at me.
Confused, I looked at her. The what?
"Uh...? What?"
The translation followed promptly from Roxanne, albeit a little annoyed.
"Social system support to be provided."
Oh God, apparently putting me in an education camp wasn't enough. No, they put me in with the sociopaths and the mentally deranged ones as well.
"Sounds lovely," I said before I could think about it.
