When I arrived in the washrooms, I went straight to the nearest sink and began washing my face and hands first. Dirt and sweat came off my face and washed away. I looked at myself in the mirror. I had dark circles under my eyes, was white as a sheet, and Hempton's handprint was still on my chin. A bruise had formed on my cheekbones where he had punched me a few days ago. It was already turning purple. Hesitantly, I touched the spot where he had grabbed me with my fingertips. It hurt so much that I winced slightly. The skin was red and felt sore.
Behind me, I heard the flush of a stall toilet and the door opened. I had gotten here so worked up that I hadn't even paid attention to whether anyone else was here.
Roxanne exited the stall and looked at me in surprise when she saw me standing in front of the sink.
"Hey," she then said in surprise.
"Hi," I greeted back weakly.
Roxanne gave me a small, uncertain smile before stepping over to the sinks as well.
She washed her hands while I looked in the mirror again.
Fuck, I really didn't look good. My brown eyes looked totally glassy. Roxanne turned off the water and dried her hands before clearing her throat and looking at me.
Hesitantly, I looked at her.
"What happened there?" she asked, pointing to my chin.
"Hempton," I replied curtly.
She nodded.
"I have balm down in the tent and also a towel and shampoo if you want to shower," she then suggested.
Surprised, I looked at her.
"I guess since no one has seen you downstairs yet, maybe you wanted to shower first, right?" she explained.
From her words, I gathered that she had been through the same thing I had.
"Yeah, that would be nice," I then said.
"Wait a minute, I'll be right back."
When she returned, she had brought not only a towel and shampoo, but fresh clothes.
"I took them out of your bag, is that okay?" she then asked.
"Yeah, sure it is. Thanks."
"Take a shower first. We'll do the ointment thing later. And take your time. In the meantime, I'll settle something with Daisy."
Without waiting for my answer, she left the washroom, leaving me alone.
"Okay," I mumbled before I disappeared into one of the shower stalls with a towel and shampoo, undressed and turned on the water. The dirty clothes, I hung over the door. The water was at least lukewarm and I enjoyed it on my skin and lathered my hair with the shampoo. I then used it to wash the rest of my body as well.
It felt good to shower again. Two days wasn't necessarily long now, but the urge to be completely clean again afterwards was the same. As I dried off and put on the fresh clothes, I almost felt like a whole new person.
While I was drying my hair, Roxy came in. In her hand she held the balm.
"Do you want me to do it, or do you want to?" she then asked hesitantly.
"Can you do it on the ribs? I can do the rest myself," I replied.
"Okay. Lift up your shirt," I obeyed and turned so she could easily apply cream to the area.
"That thing with your jaw, did Hempton do that too?" she then asked.
I looked down at the floor. Actually, I didn't want to talk about that right now. Roxanne seemed to sense it, because she changed the subject.
