After Harry had taken Avery away, I looked anxiously at the two of them. Avery looked really bad and since she only got a day's rest, it would probably look even worse tomorrow, if she was able to get up at all after that.
We had to think of something quickly. That's why I thought it was the best idea to go to Ed as soon as possible and talk to him about the next step. However, it probably wouldn't be that easy to talk to him anymore. Hempton now suspected us more than ever and would probably be watching our every move. So we needed a suitable opportunity.
This came to me by pure chance that very evening, when Ed loaded Hempton's wood into his truck and instructed me to help him. Hempton actually seemed to have no second thoughts about it, or at least he didn't let on.
Still, I was aware that we had to be quick and couldn't have an eternally long conversation with each other.
"How are things looking?" he just murmured to me without looking at me.
"Not good. We need to get out of here as soon as we can. Hempton is now convinced that we are responsible for everything. He beat Avery up pretty bad and wants to come back for her tomorrow. I think if things keep going this way, he'll beat another one of us to death."
"Hempton wants me to deliver straw to him again this week. I've only got it loose. You could hide under it if it helps."
"That's good, I've got an idea already, but you'd be taking full risks with it though. Would you be willing to do that?"
I asked, not because I was worried about him, but because I just wanted to hear how far he was willing to go to prove his loyalty to us. He proved to us the first two times that he was willing to help us, but now he was no longer just a driver or a supplier, he would be involved. He was taking the same risk we were.
"What do I have to do?" asked Ed quietly.
"Make sure Avery is taken back to the hole after her punishment. Then you bring the straw to Hempton a day later. Avery will fake a seizure shortly after you arrive and then you bring Hempton in. As soon as he opens the door, push him in and lock him in. We'll then jump straight into the truck and hide under the straw and you'll disappear with the car."
Ed frowned.
"And Hempton?"
"He'll take care of himself. While you run to the cabin with Hempton, a couple of us will load our stuff while one of us distracts any possible guards, okay?", I explained to him.
"Are you sure this is going to work?" asked Ed doubtfully.
"We don't have any other plan," I simply replied.
"Okay, fine, I'm in," he then said with a shrug as we loaded the last logs.
"Hempton will know you helped us afterwards, are you sure you want to do that?", I probed again.
"By the time you're gone, it'll all be over anyway. We'll be fine. You'll have to hide somewhere else once I'm gone with you, though."
I nodded.
"I'll think of something else."
"Okay, let's do it. I'll be ready the day after tomorrow at the latest, is that enough? And I'll also have a look around for a suitable place for you," he then asked with a shrug.
"It'll have to do."

I explained to the others throughout the day. In fact, some of the supervisors seemed to be eyeing us more closely now, so we had to be very careful how we behaved. One supervisor stood during lunch, not two metres from our table, while another watched us closely from one side of the hall. Every step we took, just the two of us or as a whole group, was watched from then on and someone followed us every time. So I secretly wrote a note with the individual steps and gave it first to Harry, who later passed it on to Niall. I explained the plan to Avery in the washroom in the evening, as this was the only place where none of the male carers could follow us. After we disappeared into the shower cubicles, I had to help Avery take off her clothes, as Hempton had beaten her up so badly that Avery couldn't even lift her arms above her head. Then we both turned the taps on full so that no one could hear us talking over the rush of the water.
