Abuse and neglect at Houens Odde Camp Denmark

19th August 2010. It is a scandal that is very hard to imagine. On 17th August 2010, the now 16-year-old Avery Collins, who had been reported missing for weeks, turned up at the Amsterdam police station.

With her, a good friend from England and an unbelievable story. Due to a misunderstanding by her mentally ill aunt, the girl ended up in a camp for children and adolescents who are difficult to educate and who are criminals.

The girl spent about six weeks there and experienced an torture that is otherwise only known from a Hollywood movie. According to her and her boyfriend Harry Styles, the teenagers weren't educated for the better, but tortured and neglected both physically and mentally.

The director in charge, A. Hempton, is also suspected of having sexually abused some of his children. Any form of disobedience was apparently punished with violence, solitary confinement, deprivation of food or threats of prolongation of stay. There were also allegedly falsified medical records of the children's mental health in order to make an extension of the prison sentence convincing.

Along with Avery Collins and Harry Styles, seven other teenagers escaped from the camp to expose the cruel acts. They were helped to escape by an unnamed warden who also gave them shelter in his house before they returned home.

Now the police have to find out how many children were still under the care of A. Hempton and which leaders were involved in the child abuse.

30th August 2010

Good evening, ladies and gentlemen,

It is the topic that has been making headlines for over a week now. In Kolding Denmark, the terrible activities of an educational camp for difficult-to-educate and delinquent youths were recently uncovered by nine teenagers, including 16-year-old Avery Collins, who had been declared missing for weeks. Instead of helping the children and youths to learn from their mistakes and guide them back on the right path, they were physically and psychologically abused there. Anthony Hempton, the camp's leading director, is accused of several cases of assault, as well as sexual abuse of a minor. It also turned out that windowless bunkers were used as isolation and food deprivation as methods of punishment. In addition, the teenagers were threatened that their stay would be extended in case of disobedience. For this purpose, even medical credits had allegedly been faked, which credibly represented the psychological state of health of the teenagers.

In order to expose the abuse, a number of teenagers fled in a very risky manner, bringing evidence they captured in photographs and video footage to the police.

The police are still investigating and are currently questioning the youths and former participants of the camp, as well as the supervisors, to find out who all was involved in the abuse. It may take several more months before a court case is held.

And now for the weather....

Investigation completed. When will the trial begin?

09th October 2010. This morning, one of the investigators in charge in England declared in a press conference that the investigation in the case of the Houens Odde Camp was now officially closed and that the court case would now be set up. However, he did not say when the trial was expected to begin. In the meantime, Anthony Hempton has been remanded in custody, along with several of his colleagues. As Hempton was in charge of the camp for more than four years, the number of victims who suffered under his leadership is still unclear, but it is assumed that there were more than 200 victims. As information of the corruption has been distributed to various police forces in Denmark, England and Amsterdam, the authorities are now working hard to make all the evidence fit for trial as soon as possible.
