Whatever Harry had discussed with Avery when they joined us at the tents that evening it seemed to have helped. Avery at least looked a bit more herself again after that.
It calmed me down a little.
However, she had become much calmer since then. And I wasn't the only one who noticed.
After a few days, Roxanne and I were approached by Ed about it. Ed was probably the kindest and most sincere person of the leaders. He was the only one who cared about what was happening to us and also wanted us to be reasonably well off here. He really still cared about our health and our mental state.
If he were the one running the camp, many things here would run a lot better.
I really liked him.
"Is...is everything okay with Avery?" he asked hesitantly.
I was still thinking about what to answer when Roxy already did it in her insensitive way.
"Why don't you ask her yourself Ed, or better yet, why don't you call a meeting and suggest some changes?"
She snorted contemptuously and left the classroom.
"Roxanne...", Ed called after her, but she ignored him.
He sighed and rubbed his eyes.
Then he looked to me.
"Seriously, Daisy. How is she?"
I shrugged my shoulders uncertainly.
"She'll be fine...I think. She's just very quiet at the moment," I then replied.
Ed bit his lower lip and nodded. You could tell he had wished for a different answer. And he could see in my face what I had been wishing for all along.
"Daisy..."
"I know it's not your fault. And that you can't change everything on your own. But you could change something if you wanted to," I interrupted him.
Ed smiled sadly and ran his hand through his red hair.
"But it's not as easy as you think, Daisy. I'm just one on my own and..."
"That doesn't mean you have to agree or watch everything. The choice is yours," I said and then left the classroom as well.

After dinner, one of the caregivers called me into Hempton's office. My mother was on the phone and wanted to talk to me. Since the only landline phone was in Hempton's office, I had to make the call from there.
I hesitated as I picked up the phone. I still had just under six months to go and I hadn't heard from my mother in two months now. More specifically, not since Ed had told me about my parents' divorce. Maybe it wasn't such a good idea to talk to her now.
"Hello?", I said hesitantly.
Hempton remained seated beside me at his desk, eyeing me closely. He stayed in the room to make sure I didn't say anything wrong. One didn't even have privacy when talking on the phone.
"Oh Daisy, darling, it's all so awful! Your father moved out today!" my mother said almost theatrically on the other end of the line.
I rubbed my eyes. Of course. Before she asked how I was actually doing, she had to get rid of her issues first.
"Okay, and where did he move to now?"
You could immediately hear from my mother's tone that I had asked the wrong question.
