It had been very important for me that Roxy had let me braid her hair. She had never let me get that close to her before. Roxanne herself would probably dismiss the whole thing as nothing, but I was sure that somewhere it had been quite nice for her too.

The conversation about Ed had been a slap in the face for me. I understood that he had been scared, but the fact that he had simply done nothing to help Roxy still disappointed me.

Above all, it destroyed the image I had had of Ed before. A simple, compassionate, funny guy. But now there was something in that image that made everything seem darker. But I also realized that I shouldn't judge Ed in such a big way. Even the kindest people in the world, had certainly done things they weren't proud of. To think that I had damaged a car because I had gotten angry. Therefore, I wasn't completely innocent either.

Avery and I had asked if we should tell the boys what Ed had done, but Roxy asked us to wait until Ed had given us his consent.

"If they find out what Ed did, they'll do something else stupid. We'll wait to do that until we have the escape plan ready," she explained to me.

Even though it was clear to me that the boys could clearly control themselves better than Hempton, it was also best not to challenge their temper.

The next morning, in class, I wrote a note on a piece of paper that I slipped to Ed as he walked between the desks.

"We need to talk!" it said.

Ed glanced at the note, glanced over at me for a second, then kept walking, not letting on.

Avery glanced over at me and I shrugged imperceptibly. It wasn't entirely clear to me whether Ed had accepted the request.

However, I got my answer after class when he said, "Daisy, would you stay there for a moment? I'll excuse you to Hempton!"

I looked over at Avery and nodded at her. Ed had noticed the exchange of glances between us so he said, "Avery, you too."

We tried not to let on while we waited for the rest of the students to leave. When the last student was out the door, Ed closed the door behind us. He gave us an expectant look.

"So, what's so important?"

"Can we trust you?", Avery asked him in a critical way.

Surprised, he looked at both of us. Then he nodded in confusion.

"Yeah, sure you can. I'd never do anything to you guys, would I?"

"And if we confide in you? You wouldn't tell Hempton?"

"I'm really the last person to spill any secrets. And I wouldn't even tell Hempton a secret about myself. Why do you ask such questions? What are you trying to do?" asked Ed almost impatiently.

"We know what happened between Hempton and Roxy. We also know what part you played in it," I then said quietly.

All Colour drained from Ed's face as he realized what we meant. He ran his hand through his ginger hair and then looked at us almost desperately.

"And now you're going to blackmail me with this? I'm really sorry about what happened and that I didn't-" Avery interrupted him.

"We're not trying to blackmail you. Not exactly. We want to give you a chance to redeem yourself," she explained to him.

"What do you mean? What do you want from me?"

"We want to get out of here. And we want you to help us," I enlightened him.

Ed looked at me as if I had just explained to him that the earth had once been a pretty piece of furniture.

"You want what...?"
