I could still feel the pain in my leg. When we had scurried across the yard and got into the car, I had expected every second that someone would spot and catch us.

I had squeezed into the foot-well of the back seat with Liam and made myself as small as possible. Neither of us had dared to even move and I clutched Liam's hand so tightly that my knuckles stood out white.

As someone approached the car, a horrified gasp escaped me and Liam pressed a hand over my mouth. Someone got in and the driver's door slammed shut.

When I saw Ed's ginger hair peeking out from behind the seat, a burden weighing a ton fell from me. Liam took his hand away from my mouth I only now realized how I had been holding my breath all this time. I shakily exhaled and heard Ed start the engine.

The car started to move and then I felt us drive off. Although my heart was already so much lighter, I knew that the danger was not over until we had passed the main gate.

I still clutched Liam's hand and felt him squeeze mine tighter as well.

When the car stopped again after a few meters, I tensed up again.

What if someone had already noticed our absence? What if the car was searched?

Ed rolled down the window and I heard him talking to someone.

"Tell Hempton I'll deliver him straw another time. This time, though, I'll come straight to the camp. Otherwise I'll lose an awful lot of money on it. I can't afford that, man," I heard him say to someone.

Probably the guard.

"I'll tell him. But I think he's already going to freak out when he hears about the fire."

"It's not my fault. Both the nursing staff and I have told him a hundred times now that he should renew the fire protection measures. That's what he gets for it now," Ed grumbled.

"Maybe so. But honestly, how could it be that there was a fire all of a sudden?" the caretaker wondered.

"What do I know? Maybe some bottle of narcotics broke nearby. All it takes is a spark and that's it," Ed opined.

"Anyway. Are you coming back today?"

"If my girlfriend doesn't kick me out, I don't think so. I'll see you tomorrow then. I have to find some new straw first," Ed said goodbye.

"All right, see you tomorrow."

Then the car started moving again and I felt a weight fall from my heart. We were free.

Rarely in my life had anything felt so good. I looked at Liam, obviously he felt the same way.

After what felt like an eternity, Ed spoke up from the driver's seat.

"You can come up now," he said.

Liam and I pulled ourselves from the footwell into the back seats and buckled up.

"How long are we driving now?", I asked as we drove leisurely through the village.

"About 15 minutes. Keep an eye on the rear view mirror and when we arrive, stay seated until I say you can get out."

That might have sounded a bit excessive, but neither of us raised any objections. Neither Liam nor I wanted to have to give up the feeling of freedom after only a few minutes, just because we hadn't been paying attention and someone had followed us.

When I glanced out of the window, I felt for a moment as if someone had tied my chest so tightly that I could hardly breathe. To this day, I'm not 100 percent sure what exactly happened to me at that moment, but I think it was simply the fact that I was seeing life outside the camp again for the first time in over two months that completely overwhelmed me. Liam must have felt the same way because I saw him staring tensely out of the window, his chest rising and falling violently. I touched his shoulder and he looked at me. A smile formed on my lips and something wet ran down my cheek.
