When I look back on that day when my life changed completely, it sometimes seems like a dream. I didn't really believe it when my grandmother used to say: "You can plan your life however you want, something can always happen to change your life in a second. The only guarantee we have is this: We only have a limited time on earth. And since we never know when it will end, we should use it wisely."
Of course, I knew she was right, but unless you had experienced something like that yourself, you don't understand the full extent behind it.
But before I tell you what changed my life so profoundly, I have to tell you about something else first.

Both Daisy and Linda grew more and more attached to me. It was amazing how quickly you could make such good friends within a week. But maybe it was also the situation that brought us all together. Linda had been 6 months pregnant for a few days now and it was getting really hard for her to do any active work. I helped her in the kitchen as much as I could, even when I didn't have to.
That evening Linda and I had just finished kitchen duty when the baby started kicking her. Linda immediately grabbed her belly and stroked it.
"Have you thought of a name by now?", I asked as I locked up the kitchen.
"Not yet, I think it will come to me at the latest when the baby is born. I think when you see the baby for the first time, you just know."
"I guess so, but there's certainly no harm in thinking about it beforehand," I said.
"Hmm, we could ask Daisy. I'm sure she's come up with about 80 names already."
I laughed. I could picture Daisy doing that pretty well.
"What about the father, by the way? When your baby arrives, will he also be involved in looking after it?", I then asked.
Linda had not mentioned the baby's father yet.
Linda snorted disapprovingly as we made our way down to the tents.
"Oh, you can forget about him. I called him from camp two days after I found out. His only reaction was to ask me why I haven't been paying more attention. Like it was all my fault. And he refused to take any responsibility. So much for that."
" Nice guy. Didn't you use any protection?", I asked cautiously.
"Yeah, sure, we did. But still, that one time apparently didn't work. Well, at least the only upside will be that the baby won't have to have an idiot for a father."
"I guess that's true. I guess as long as, the child is loved, it doesn't matter who raises it anyway," I said.
"Do you want to fee it kicking?" said Linda then, turning her belly towards me.
"Yeah, sure," carefully I put a hand on her belly.
At first I felt nothing, but then I felt something bumping against my hand. Surprised, I looked up and laughed. Linda laughed too.
"Wow, the little one is really kicking!", I said laughing.
"Indeed. I think the worst is when he kicks my belly button."
"Once the kid is born, I'm sure he'll keep you very busy."
"No doubt about that."
I bent down to Linda's belly and gently stroked her belly, feeling the baby kick again.
"Hey little one, give your mama a break. After all, she has to raise you later too," I said gently.
I straightened up and looked at Linda.
