I didn't want to attract attention for now, so I just spent the next day doing my work. I felt Harry's piercing eyes at my back, but I simply ignored him. If he wanted to be pissed off, he could just resign himself to his fate.
After getting Daisy to talk to Liam alone, I began to look around for escape routes, now without being disturbed.
Again I visited the spot by the river where I had first thought about escaping and where Harry had caught me.
If Harry was right and there were guards on every bank, the water would hardly be a good option.
He had said there would be guards on every shore.
What other ways were there? This was a half-island, so there couldn't be that many exits.
But were any of them really under round-the-clock surveillance?
"Avery?", Louis suddenly appeared behind me.
"Yes?", I asked, trying to look as neutral as possible.
"We are having dinner. You coming?" he asked and I nodded and followed him.
We walked the first part of the way in silence.
Then Louis hesitantly spoke up.
"Hey, I know it's probably none of my business, but Harry didn't mean anything by it the other day. He just wanted to save you some trouble. Please don't be mad at him anymore."
I snorted in contempt.
"God, has he told everyone in camp now about what went on between us?"
"No, but he told Niall and Niall can't keep something like that to himself."
I had to smile against my will. I could imagine Niall doing that pretty well.
"Why would he tell Niall something like that?"
Louis smiled gently at first, but then turned serious again.
"Look, Avery, I've been spending time with these four goofballs for over a year now. They're all I have right now and they know it themselves. And Niall can usually keep secrets, but when it comes to one of the five of us and we don't all like each other, it gets to him and then it has to come out."
I sighed. I understood what Louis was trying to tell me and that he wanted to help Harry. On the other hand, I didn't want the thing between Harry and me to become everyone's problem either. At least not like this. I wanted the others to come with me, but I didn't want them to find out that way.
"Louis, I know you want to help Harry, but this was between the two of us. We didn't see eye to eye. That can happen too," I said seriously, but tried not to sound rude.
"I know, and honestly, I don't want to get into it too much, but...you know, we all miss our families and we only have each other. And I love these four chaotics like they're my family. If we're going to survive this, we all have to stick together and the only way we can do that is if we all trust each other and try to get along."
I nodded. I understood that very well.
"I'll...I'll talk to him, okay?", I finally sighed in surrender.
Louis smiled gently at me.
"Thank you, Avery."
"Don't make me regret this," I murmured, then walked the last few feet ahead to camp.

Daisy refused to leave the tent and tell what had happened between her and Liam. But since her eyes were all red and puffy and she was sniffling all the time, I could at least guess.
