Roxanne had told me that she would let me know the next day whether everything had worked out or not, but that wasn't even necessary because the following morning I was woken up by someone roughly dragging me up from my cot and out of the cell into the daylight. While my eyes were still adjusting to the daylight, I was pushed roughly backwards, hitting my back against a wall. The next moment, a huge splash of ice-cold water poured over me and I gasped in shock. A bucket had been emptied over me and the cold almost took my breath away. The next gush of water came and was emptied directly over my head. I had the feeling of emerging from an frozen lake. Shivering, I wrapped both arms around my body. Then something soft hit me in the face. A towel. I wiped my face with it and wrapped it around my shivering shoulders.
"So, how was the refreshment? Good?" a supervisor who was now coming towards me asked me.
I was unable to say anything. A second attendant with an empty bucket also appeared in front of me.
"Hempton said to clean you up a bit before going back to him."
"What? I...I thought I had another day in the hole."
"That's true. But last night another three people ran away. Two of them from your group. Hempton wants answers. And he wants you to give them to him."
Although I was miserable at that moment, I had to stifle a smile and instead put on a complete confused expression.
"And what have I got to do with it? I've been in there for days. How am I supposed to be able to help?", I asked irritated.
"What do I care? Hempton wants to ask you about it and that's it! That's all you need to know and now rub your hair dry and come with me!" he snapped at me.
I obeyed and followed one of the guardians to Hempton's cabin.
Hempton was sitting behind his desk. He was writing something down and didn't look at me. When I closed the door behind me, he finally looked up. His expression was hard to describe, but if I had to describe it, I would say madness. Just sheer, blunt madness flickering in his eyes. This man had my life in his hands, but I tried not to let any fear show. So I put on the best clueless look I could manage and took a few steps closer.
"Where are they?" asked Hempton.
His voice sounded ice-cold and involuntarily sent a shiver down my spine. Nevertheless, I kept a straight face.
"I already told you, I don't know. I was escorting Liam and Daisy to the infirmary and...", I began, but he interrupted me by throwing a stapler at me. I dodged the projectile, which slammed into the wall behind me.
"I'm not talking about Abernathy and Payne. I'm talking about Tomlinson, Malik and Rugg. Where are they?"
"Who?", I asked, confused.
"Your friends from the group. Louis, Zayn and Linda, who you hung out with so often."
"What about them?", I asked, shrugging.
"Those three disappeared last night! Where are they?" he growled at me.
I snorted half in disbelief, half amused.
"You asking me of all people? How should I know? I was still in the bunker last night, in case you've forgotten."
Hempton pushed his desk aside with a jolt and approached me menacingly.
"I don't feel like playing games now, Collins! I'll ask you again now. Where are the three of them?"
"And I'm going to say it again. I don't know! I've been in the hole for days, how was I supposed to know the three would disappear? Let alone help them do it?", I repeated, annoyed.
