Chapter 216 🔞

The paramedics rushed through the double doors...wheeling little Sadie in... with Derek and Meredith holding Shane behind them...she was still struggling to breathe...her tiny body lay in the middle of the white sheets with all sorts of tubes and cords sticking out of her while one of the paramedics held an oxygen mask to her that nearly covered her entire face...

Meredith had calmed down enough to call Cristina and Mark who met them inside...but they could barely understand a word she said through her frantic tears...

Cristina: Meredith! Derek! Is she ok?
Meredith: (cries)...I don't know...Oh God...I don't know?

Derek pulled her close as the doctors quickly gathered around Sadie to get information from the paramedics...yelling orders and screaming for people to get out of the way...it was chaos...Meredith sobbed into Derek's chest while he rubbed her back to soothe her...he didn't know what to say to help his wife...he was barely keeping it together himself...allowing his tears to flow freely down his face...he could still picture Sadie's face in his head as she struggled for air...it was the scariest thing he had ever experienced in his life...Mark put his arms around both of them...he had never seen them so distraught...barely able to get any words out...

Mark: What happened?
Derek: She...she couldn't breathe...
Meredith: She's had a bad cough for a while...we've tried everything...then she started wheezing...
Derek: I tried to stay awake...but I fell asleep holding her...then I woke up to her coughing and gagging...I didn't know what to do...I couldn't help her...
Cristina: Its ok...she's here now...they'll do everything they can for her...

They wheeled Sadie into a private room and began to work on her...but when Derek and Meredith tried to go in...one of the doctors stopped them...

Doctor: I'm sorry you have to stay out here...
Derek: Like hell we will...that's our little girl in there!

Cristina looked back and noticed that they weren't behind her...

Cristina: They can come in with me...I'll be responsible for them...
Doctor: Fine Dr. Yang...

Derek pushed pass the doctor pulling Meredith and Shane along with him...but Meredith suddenly stopped in her tracks...it was all so overwhelming...

Derek: What's wrong Meri?
Meredith: I...I don't want Shane to see her like that...it might scare him...
Mark: Here let me take him for you...
Meredith: But...I..

Meredith stood there torn...she didn't want Shane inside but she didn't want to leave him either and neither did Derek....

Mark: Its ok...I won't be far...go ahead...
Cristina: He'll be fine Meredith...Sadie needs you to be there...
Derek: I need you too...

She looked into Derek's red watery eyes...swollen from all his tears...filled with so much fear...she gently touched the side of his face and brushed the tears away with her thumb...

Meredith: Ok...take Shane please Mark...

Meredith and Derek stood by Sadie's bed in ICU trying their best to be strong...she looked so weak and helpless with all the machines and cords hooked up to her tiny body...it broke their hearts to see her that way...Cristina sat in the corner watching the couple hold on to each other by a thread...trying to keep the other from falling apart...

The lead doctor that treated Sadie enterred the room and tapped them on their shoulders...

Doctor: Mr. and Mrs. Shepherd...I'm Dr. Mark Green...can I talk to you outside? I have her labs.
Derek: I...I don't want to leave her...
Cristina: I'll stay with her...you two go ahead...
Derek: But...
Meredith: (looked up into his sad eyes)...Come on sweetie...we should talk to the doctor...we can see her from the window...
