Meredith had called several times...leaving messages on Derek's voicemail but he had not returned her call or come home yet...she was becoming concerned...it was getting close to dinner time and the chief would be arriving soon...she had been keeping the chief abreast of Derek's progress and was hoping that he could get him to talk some more about his music plans over dinner...she had Mae take the twins over to Izzie and Duff's for a few hours so that the grown ups could have some time to chat...

Adelle: He'll be here...don't worry...
Meredith: (sighs)...I hope so...
Adelle: He will...
Meredith: Where's Jake when I need him...
Adelle: In Vegas...hopefully winning the jackpot...
Meredith: Christmas in Vegas? Seriously...who does that?
Adelle: Jake does...now leave the man alone...he deserves a vacation...
Meredith: You're right....I just wish I knew where my husband was...if Jake was here...he would know...he's the best...(sighs)...I need chocolate...it helps...
Adelle: Before dinner?
Meredith: Shhh...I won't tell if you won't...

Just as she opened the cupboard her cell phone rang...

Meredith: Hey...where are you?
Derek: Stuck in traffic...and on my way home...
Meredith: I've been calling all afternoon...did you get my messages?
Derek: I just got a chance to listen to them...
Meredith: (frowns)...And why is that? You didn't show up for lunch...You didn't come home to sleep...I've been so worried...Where have you been?
Derek: (sighs)...It's a long story baby...I'll tell you when I get home...I promise...
Meredith: But...
Derek: SHIT!...WATCH IT ASSHOLE!!...Sorry baby I need to hang up and pay attention to the road...you know how manic these rush hour drivers are...I'll be home as soon as I can...DAMN IT!! ARE YOU FUCKING BLIND?
Meredith: But Derek...
Derek: And don't eat without me...I love you...bye...
Meredith: (sighs)...Bye...I love you too...

The doorbell rang...Adelle rushed to answer it and let the chief inside...Meredith walked over to greet him with a hug and a kiss...

Chief: Good evening ladies! Something smells good...
Meredith: (smiles)...I made salad...
Chief: (laughs)...I should have known...It smells delicious Adelle...
Adelle: (smiles)...Thanks sweetie...it should be ready any minute...why don't you have a seat while I finish up?

Chief walked over to the kitchen table and sat down next to Meredith...

Chief: Where's Derek?
Meredith: Um...I don't know...
Chief: (wrinkles eyebrows)...Ok...
Meredith: (sighs)...He's out...
Adelle: He'll be here...
Meredith: Right...
Chief: How's he doing?
Meredith: Well...I think he's doing his best...but he's still not sleeping and he hasn't been downstairs in the studio since forever...I'm worried...
Chief: (sighs)...And he still won't return the label execs' calls either...
Adelle: I don't blame him...(frowns)...Bunch of no good scoundrels...
Chief: True...but he still needs to make a decision about his career...
Meredith: Well...(smiles)...that's where I was hoping you would come in...

Meredith suddenly turned to smile at Adelle when she heard the garage door open...

Meredith: He's here..
Adelle: I told you...
Meredith: (narrows her eyes)...And he's also in trouble...

Derek entered the kitchen and immediately locked eyes with Meredith's green ones staring back at him...demanding answers...she stood up and met him at the door...he closed the door behind him and placed his keys on the counter...

Derek: (places his hands on her shoulders and looks into her angry eyes)...I...can...can we talk about this later...we have guests...

He pulled his eyes away from hers and directed them at Adelle and the chief who were sitting at the table...

Meredith: No...
Derek: No?
Adelle: No...
Chief: No...
Adelle: We're not guests...
Chief: We're family...
