CHAPTER 23: William Devereaux
Being the eldest among the Devereaux siblings, Uncle William had always been the arrogant, cold-hearted, and strict one in the family. He could make every family gathering uncomfortable for us. I remember hiding from him whenever they visit our family every Christmas day. I had always been scared of him. And yet, six year ago, he was the first one to comfort me after that tragedy. He took me to his home, provided me food and clothes, and gave me my own room. His tough personality didn't change but since then, I saw him in different light. I knew that he cares for me. And thus, I couldn't believe the news about his arrest at the airport.
"No. It can't be," umiiling kong bulalas.
Mabilis akong bumalik ng kwarto ni Declan at kumuha ng isang puting t-shirt mula sa kaniyang closet. Siguro naman ay hindi niya mamasamain ang paggamit ko ng kaniyang damit nang hindi nagpapaalam. Hihiramin ko lang naman, isasauli ko rin sa kaniya. Matapos magbihis ay patakbo akong lumabas ng kaniyang silid at dumiretso sa pintuan nang biglang magsalita si Miss Veron.
"Where do you think you're going?" tanong niya.
"I need to go to the police station."
"And how are you going to get there?"
Agad akong nag-isip. "I'll take a cab."
Pinindot niya ang off button sa remote control ng tv at saka tumayo at lumapit sa akin. "You'll have to walk at least 10 kilometers to get to the main road. I doubt there'll be any vehicles that may pass in this area."
Right. Sa pagkakaalala ko nang ihatid kami ni Detective Penber ay secluded nga ang lugar na ito. Halos walang bahay sa paligid maliban sa mga puno. Kinapa ko ang bulsa ng aking pantalon upang kunin ang aking cellphone subalit naalala kong iniwan ko iyon sa kwarto kagabi. At dahil gusto kong makalayo kaagad sa mansyon ay hindi ko na nagawang pumasok muli rito at kunin iyon.
"Can I borrow your phone and call the police station? Maybe they'll help me reach Detective Penber–"
"No," she snapped.
I bit on my nails nervously. Mukhang hindi niya talaga gustong makaharap o magkaroon ng komunikasyon kay Detective Penber.
"How about Declan and Lev? Can you please call them for me?" Where did they even go? Why did they leave me here?
"I sent them out for an urgent matter. Our world doesn't revolve around you."
Habang nagtatagal ako sa pagtayo sa kaniyang harapan ay mas lalong nadaragdagan ang frustration ko sa sitwasyon. Nang wala na akong ibang maisip ay atubili akong muling nagtanong:
"I know that this is too much to ask and you might think that I'm abusing your hospitality. But – will you please drive me to the police station?"
