37. Thank you for being here.
Parker's POV
"You won't let me take care of you, you won't let me take you to the hospital nor will you let me call the house worker because you want her to enjoy her day off. I'm lost here." Peering up from my intertwined hands laid down on the white duvet, I glared at Jingyi who sat at the edge of my bed dressed casually to my surprise.
I didn't want him to take care of me because I just wasn't there yet. I don't want to go to the hospital for obvious reasons and why would I take away the only time my father's employees have to themselves just to take care of me? It's not like I'm immobile.
"I'm fine Jingyi, just leave me be."
"At least rub yourself with vapour rub."
"No! It burns, I don't want it again!" I exclaimed as I touched my burning chest. The vapour rub had already made me tear up more than I wanted. I won't condemn myself to that torture again. "Nǐ shì nányǐ rěnshòu de," Jingyi said nonchalantly.
I sighed heavily. Though I'm sick, it doesn't give me the right to be so snappy with him when the entire day he's only been trying to help. Still, I don't want his help, we haven't gotten to that step yet. "Duìbùqǐ. You have to understand it's gonna take time for us to get back to that brotherly relationship so bare with me."
His lips quirked upwards into a lop-sided smile and for a few moments, he sat unresponsive, just blankly staring at the door as if he were collecting his thoughts before speaking. "I'm moving to Shanghai at the end of the month." He said, breaking through the silence.
I sat upright, "what? You mean like to visit?"
He tilted his head in my direction, "no, I'm moving there as in I'm gonna live there, Zan. I got offered a CEO position and I've already accepted it. I will be visiting at times because I'll have to do business here in the States but it won't be my home anymore."
I don't know why, but knowing that he's leaving sparked some fear within me. And I hate to admit it but it's for a selfish reason. If he leaves all the attention will be on me. My father will pressure me to become the heir of his business even more intensely. I'm doomed.
"What does dad think of this?"
"He doesn't know. I'll tell him when I get there, don't want the man to die sooner than his death date. And I know what you're thinking, you don't know this but me leaving does not change anything. Father never intended for me to run his business, it has always been you.
I've tried to persuade him to let me take control in order to spare you the trouble and allow you to follow your dreams. But he never even considered the thought, I was just his lapdog, his errand boy and that's all I would have ever been if I decided to stay. It'll be the same whether I'm here or not.
It's up to you, Parker. You either take the job or follow your dreams. I'm not worried about you, I know you won't take it but still promise me you'll do what makes you happy, not Father. He already lived his dream, it's our turn now."
Knowing this now, that he never intended for Jingyi to run his business makes my skin crawl. Everything Jingyi has done, including ruining our relationship was in the name of our father and his business. And what does he get in return? A kick to the face. I hate that man, and if there was any redemption for him, I know it'll be harder to find now.
