"Can I ask you something?" Paxton asks, looking down at his steak.
We came out to eat at some restaurant. It was pretty packed, but the food was amazing.
"Depends." I reply before placing a piece of lettuce into my mouth.
"Why did you get so upset after what happened back at the diner?"
I sigh.
"Why are you asking me that?" I question.
"I want to know, Ivy. You don't even know the girl." He says.
"I just didn't like that. Okay? Can we please just talk about something else?" I reply, annoyed.
Paxton sighs and nods.
"Can I ask you something?" I ask, trying to change the subject.
"Depends." He replies as he looks up at me.
"I don't want this to seem rude or anything but how old were you when your parents died?" I asked, afraid if he would be sensitive about the whole situation.
"16." He responded.
I looked at him. He didn't seem to care at all, even though that was only 2 years ago.
"How?"
"What do you mean?" He asked, a bit confused about what I was asking.
"Umm... how did they die?" I asked again, hesitant about the question.
"A mission." He replied with no emotion on his face.
"They were a part of a gang?"
Paxton nodded. "They were the leaders." He adds.
I looked down at my food.
Did he miss them? Did he care?
"What are you thinking about tesorina?" Paxton asks, breaking me away with my thoughts.
I looked back up at him, he was looking at me differently. It wasn't bad. Just different than usual.
"How do you do it?" I blurt out all of sudden without thinking.
"Do what?"
"That. Do you just forget them? You seem to act like them dying didn't affect you at all." I start. "I barely knew my mom, she died years ago yet I just sit here hoping she would come back, and hold me." I add, on the verge of tears.
"I didn't forget them, I could never. My parents and I had a complicated relationship, but I loved them. After they left my uncle he-" Paxton looked away.
"Paxton?"
Paxton quickly looked back at me.
"I just learned to push all my emotions away." He answered.
I stared at him, confused.
What was he trying to say before? What happened between him and William?
"Anyway, I'm tired. We should head back. We have a big day tomorrow." He notes, before placing a 100 dollar bill on the table and getting up.
I nodded and got up with him.
That night while I laid in the bed with Paxton fast asleep on the bed next to mine. All my thoughts started running throughout my head again.
What was he hiding? What really happened after his parents died? Why did I care so much about his life all of a sudden? Why wasn't he telling me the truth? I thought he cared about me. Ugh, all of these questions are gonna kill me. I hate men.
I just want to know the truth.
