"Voila!" Bill called out cheerfully, serving me a plate of fries with a burger.
"Yummy" I giggled, tucking straight in. It was a hot sunny day so Bill had invited me over for a BBQ whilst Blair was out visiting some of her friends. "I am the master chef" he chuckled, tugging at the apron that covered his clothes.
"For sure!"
We were both lounging around in his garden, listening to Madonna on the radio. "You know, I haven't had this much fun in a while," he said thoughtfully. "Really?" It piqued my interest. "I suppose, usually Blair takes me along to these horse races but they're kinda boring" he replied, keeping his voice down even though it was just us.
"Oh...I see."
The more I thought about her, the more I felt there was something off. Bill always talked highly of her yet his facial expressions told another story. "How did you meet?" I asked curiously. "At UCLA, she was top of the class and well, we just clicked" he explained, taking a bite.
I looked at him deeply, not really wanting to know the answer to my next question.
"Do you think your soulmates?"
Bill looked at me in slight surprise, the question catching him off guard. "I-...yes I suppose. She's been very good to me since the start of our relationship." My heart sank but I kept my head up, forcing a smile. "Do you think I was ever good for you?" I pressed on. This time, he nodded.
"You were amazing to me. An angel" he chuckled and my smile went from forced to natural.
He went to reach for the sauce and then clicked his tongue. "Shoot, we're out of ketchup. I'll need to go to the store" he said. I offered to go along with him but Bill shook his head. "No no you relax! I'll be back soon" he flashed a smile.
I watched him leave as I snuggled down into the lounger. Hanging out together just felt so right and things seemed to be going so well. I was almost drifting off into a nap when I heard keys in the door a while later. "That was quick Bill" I giggled.
Harsh footsteps approached and I was met with a cold, icy gaze. "Oh...It's you" Blair greeted, her nose upturned. "Hi..." I replied quietly, the awkwardness was so thick even scissors couldn't cut through. "What are you doing here?" She questioned firmly.
"Bill invited me over to hangout" I answered honestly. It didn't mean to come out cocky but it did. Blair's eyes squinted a little and I broke the contact, standing up to get a glass of water. She blocked my way. "Excuse me," I said politely as possible but she didn't budge.
"So you and Bill...You're close friends huh?" She interrogated. Our faces were inches apart, the strong smell of her perfume could make anyone choke. "Yeah, I guess you could say that" is all I said. She scanned me up and down before bursting into a rude chuckle.
"He wouldn't chase a rat like you from a mile away."
I was shocked, how dare she talk to me like that. "What did you just say to me?" My eyebrow raised, blood slowly boiling. "You heard me hunny. You know, if I were you I'd stay away seeing as he's MY fiancee. Husband to be. The future father of OUR children" she rubbed in my face. I felt powerless but didn't show her any signs of weakness.
"Then I pray for him" I scoffed.
I went to walk past when she grabbed tightly onto my wrist, her bony fingers digging into my skin. "Girl I could ruin you in a second. Stay away from him or there's going to be problems" she threatened. I snapped my hand back, the two of us glaring.
"I will not do that! He's an important person in my life!"
"Too bad, he doesn't want you. He just feels lonely when I'm not around but I guarantee you he's VERY satisfied when I'm around" she winked, trying to get a rise out of me. I took a deep breath, keeping my composure but in my head...The bitch was getting her ass whooped by me.
Before I could reply Bill returned, carrying some grocery bags. He seemed surprised to see us standing so close. "Oh, hey baby" he greeted. I watched as Blair strutted over and planted a sloppy kiss on his lips. Bill flashed me a look and I knew he was uncomfortable too.
"How about a date tonight babe?" She suggested.
"Yeah...Sure" he smiled.
Just like that, I knew I had lost.
