Breaking down on the side of the highway was one thing I didn't want to happen. Another thing I didn't want to do was call Kieran, but he was the only person I could get ahold of.

Kieran and I were best friends. We started drifting apart, and that's partially because we were having a lack of communication. Things didn't end up well, we got into a huge fight because Kieran wanted to try and work things out, but I didn't because I just didn't think they would work out.

The call rings three times before he picks up.
"Kai?" He asks.
I take a deep sigh. "Listen, I'm only calling because I don't know who else to call. I'm broke down on the side of the highway, my parents are out of town, and my siblings didn't pick up." I blurt.
"Okay..."
"I've got to call a towing company, but I've got to get home. I guess I could walk home."
"You're not walking home." He says. "I'll be there within the next ten minutes."
I disconnect the call, hitting my head against the seat and groaning.

"I already called the towing company." I say when Kieran walks up.
"Well, hello to you too." He says, grinning at me.
Don't. Don't smile. Don't fall back into him.

The tow truck driver shows up about five minutes later. He goes over a bunch of policies, I tell him where I want my car towed to, and then he loads it up.

"I miss you, Kai," Kieran says once we're in his car.
"We're not good for each other, Kieran," I snap.
"Who says?! Kai, we can work this out. And you know that! You know that we can work this out. We just need better communication! Why don't you want this anymore?"
I look around the car— anywhere but at him. "Because I'm in love with you!" I shout. "Is that a good enough treason?"
He shakes his head. "No," he says softly, leaning in and pressing his lips to mine.

He pulls away looking at me.
"But if you don't want this, I'll leave you alone. I'll drop you off at home, and you'll never have to see me again." He says, looking at me.
"No— no, that's not what I want. I want you."

Instead of taking me home, we drive back to his house, because now, we've got a lot of talking to do.

I follow him down the hall to his bedroom, going in after he does and shutting the door behind us.

I wrap my arms around his neck, pulling him closer to me and letting my lips touch his. He pulls me closer to him, resting his hands on my waist, but he pushes back.
"We need to talk about this." He says, looking at me and moving backward to sit on his bed.
I sigh. "I know... I should've said something. But... I was scared. I didn't want to lose you, so I didn't tell you. But then I did lose you. And it was entirely my fault. I cried for days, and I barely slept, and—"

His lips are on mine again, and he's pulling me over onto his lap. He bites my bottom lip, pulling back and pressing his lips to my neck. He pulls back, looking me in my eyes.
"We can fix it, okay? But you can't keep secrets. We have to be better at communication." He says, holding my hand in his.
I nod. "I know, and I will. I'll be better."
He smiles softly, pulling me back into him, kissing me.
